Portable manual ventilation device
First Claim
1. A portable ventilation system for manually ventilating a patient in clinical applications not undergoing general anesthesia, comprising:
- a manual closed circuit ventilation device not configured for delivering general anesthesia, having a closed breathing circuit having a manually squeezable bag, a carbon dioxide absorption canister, a plurality of valves, a gas port, an expiratory intersection, an inspiratory intersection, tubing having an interior, said squeezable bag, said absorption canister, said valves, said port, said expiratory intersection, said inspiratory intersection coupled by said tubing and in fluid communication in the closed breathing circuit, said squeezable bag having said tubing coupling at a distal end and a proximal end, said gas port coupling directly to said tubing in fluid communication with a gas source;
said device having a plurality of sensors, said sensors operative for measuring a plurality of parameters within the closed breathing circuit, said sensors within said tubing producing a measurement for each parameter, said sensor coupled to said tubing interior, said device having a monitor, said monitor having a display screen, said monitor coupled to said sensors, each said sensor having a lead connecting to said monitor, said monitor displaying on said display screen said measurement for each parameter as said squeezable bag is compressed;
a ventilation mask coupled to the expiratory intersection and the inspiratory intersection;
a housing having a plurality of openings operative for coupling tubing to the closed breathing circuit, the housing containing a portion of said closed breathing circuit, said portion including said valves, said tubing, said carbon dioxide absorption canister, said sensors and sensor leads, tubing coupled to said expiratory intersection, tubing coupled to said inspiratory intersection and tubing coupled to said gas port of said closed breathing circuit extending through the openings in said housing, said manually squeezable bag external to the housing; and
a portable stand having a top and a bottom, said bottom having wheels, said top coupled to said monitor, said monitor on top of the stand, said monitor external to said housing, said housing having the closed breathing circuit coupled to said stand between the top and the bottom, said stand portably wheeled to a patient requiring ventilation, said patient having the ventilation mask in place, said monitor on the stand displaying on said display screen said measurement for each parameter as said squeezable bag is compressed, the bag manually ventilating the patient, the monitor assuring safe and efficacious manual ventilation by the closed breathing circuit.

Abstract
A portable, compact closed circuit ventilation device for manual ventilation of a patient undergoing a surgical or medical procedure that requires sedation as well as emergency management of respiratory failure. One example embodiment includes a closed breathing circuit having a manually squeezable bag, a carbon dioxide absorption canister, a plurality of valves, a gas port and a plurality of sensors for measuring Tidal Volume (TV), Peak Airway Pressure (PAP) and End Tidal CO2 (ETCO2). Another example embodiment includes an open breathing circuit having a bag, valves and sensors. A monitor displays the sensor measurements during the respiratory phases. In a spontaneously breathing patient the device may be used to assess the adequacy of patient'"'"'s respiratory efforts. During manual or assisted ventilation, the monitor assures safe and efficacious ventilation by the closed breathing circuit.
