1. A method of detecting aggressive metastatic melanoma or metastatic breast carcinoma tumor cells in a human patient comprising the steps of:

  • a. obtaining a sample of tumor cells from the human patient, wherein said sample presents Nodal in patients with aggressive metastatic melanoma or metastatic breast carcinoma tumor cells;

    b. assaying the sample for the presence of Nodal protein and Lefty protein; and

    c. detecting aggressive metastatic melanoma or metastatic breast carcinoma tumor cells if Nodal protein is present and Lefty protein is absent in the sample.
