Abstract

A system for controlling a supply of ozone to a washing machine during operation thereof. The system comprising a washing machine having an internal drum for containing laundry and a quantity of a water. An ozone generator is connected to the washing machine and the ozone generator produces and supplies the produced ozone to the washing machine for ozonating the water. At least one sensor is provided for sensing a quantity of ozone exhausting from the washing machine during operation thereof, and the at least sensor being coupled to the ozone generator for interrupting production of ozone when a quantity of ozone exhausting from the washing machine exceeds a safe level.

Claims

1. A system for controlling a supply of ozone for laundering clothing, the system comprising at least one washing machine comprising:

an internal drum for containing both laundry to be washed and a quantity of water;

at least one ozone sampling outlet for sampling an ozone concentration of the washing machine;

an ozone generator, coupled to the washing machine, for producing and supplying ozone to the water in the washing machine;

an ozone exhaust sensor, coupled with the ozone sampling outlet, for sensing a concentration of ozone within the washing machine during operation of the washing machine;

a controller for controlling a flow of ozone from the ozone generator to the washing machine;

the controller including a temporary interrupt mechanism coupling the ozone exhaust sensor to the ozone generator, the controller being configured for;

(1) temporarily interrupting a supply of the ozone by the ozone generator to the washing machine in an event that the concentration of ozone, within the washing machine, exceeds a desired level of ozone of at least 0.1 parts per million,

(2) continuing interruption of the supply of the ozone, to the washing machine, until the ozone exhaust sensor again detects that the concentration of the ozone, within the washing machine, is below the desired level; and

(3) permitting further supply of ozone to the water in the washing machine so that additional ozone is supplied to the washing machine once the concentration of the ozone, within the washing machine, again falls below the desired level.

The system for controlling the supply of ozone to the washing machine according to claim 1, wherein the ozone exhaust sensor issues a variable command to the ozone generator for proportionally decreasing the supply of the ozone to the water in the washing machine so as to maintain the concentration of ozone, in the washing machine, below the desired level.

The system for controlling the supply of ozone to the washing machine according to claim 1, wherein the system further comprises an area ozone level sensor, spaced from the ozone exhaust sensor, for detecting a concentration of the ozone contained within an area accommodating the at least one washing machine, and, in an event that the area ozone level sensor detects an ozone concentration, for the area, in excess of a desired area level of ozone of at least 0.1 parts per million, the area ozone level sensor interrupts further production of the ozone by the ozone generator.

4. The system for controlling the supply of ozone to the washing machine according to claim 1, wherein the ozone supplied to the washing machine has a particle size ranging from about 2 microns to about 20 microns.

5. A system for controlling a supply of ozone for laundering clothing, the system comprising at least one washing machine comprising:

an internal drum for containing both laundry to be washed and a quantity of water;

at least one ozone exhaust outlet for exhausting as from the washing machine to determine an ozone concentration of a gas sample of the washing machine;

an ozone generator, coupled to the washing machine, for producing and supplying ozone to the water of the washing machine;

an air supply device for supplying air to the ozone generator for producing the ozone;

an ozone exhaust sensor, coupled with the ozone withdrawing outlet, for sensing a concentration of ozone in the gas sample of the washing machine during operation of the washing machine; and

a controller for controlling a flow of ozone from the ozone generator to the washing machine;

the controller including a temporary interrupt mechanism coupling the ozone exhaust sensor to the ozone generator, the controller being configured for;

(1) temporarily interrupting the supply of the ozone by the ozone generator to the washing machine in an event that the ozone exhaust sensor detects that the concentration of ozone, of the gas sample, exceeds a desired level of least 0.1 parts per million,

(2) continuing interruption of the supply of the ozone, to the washing machine, until the ozone exhaust sensor again detects that the concentration of the ozone, of the gas sample, is below the desired level; and

(3) permitting further supply of ozone by the ozone generator to the washing machine once the concentration of the ozone, of the gas sample, is detected by the ozone exhaust sensor as falling below the desired level.

The system for controlling the supply of ozone to the washing machine according to claim 5, wherein the ozone exhaust sensor issues a variable command to the ozone generator for proportionally decreasing the supply of the ozone to the washing machine so as to maintain the concentration of ozone, in the washing machine, below the desired level.

The system for controlling the supply of ozone to the washing machine according to claim 5, wherein the system further comprises an area ozone level sensor, spaced from the an ozone exhaust sensor, for detecting a concentration of the ozone contained within an area accommodating the at least one washing machine, and,

in an event that the area ozone level sensor detects the ozone concentration for the area which exceeds a desired area level of ozone of at least 0.1 parts per million, the area ozone level sensor interrupts further production of the ozone by the ozone generator until the area ozone level sensor again detects that the concentration of ozone for the area is below the desired area level.

8. The system for controlling the supply of ozone to the washing machine according to claim 5, wherein the air supply device includes a drying unit for removing moisture from the air prior to supplying the air to the ozone generator.

9. The system for controlling the supply of ozone to the washing machine according to claim 5, wherein the washing machine includes at least one sparger which contains at least one injection nozzle for injecting the supplied ozone into the water contained within the washing machine.

The system for controlling the supply of ozone to the washing machine according to claim 9, wherein the at least one injector nozzle injects ozone which has a particle size of from about 2 microns to about 20 microns so as to facilitate mixing of the ozone with the water contained within the washing machine and thereby provides a substantially uniform mixture thereof.

The system for controlling the supply of ozone to the washing machine according to claim 5, wherein the ozone generator produces about 4 grams per hour of ozone at an ozone concentration of about 5% ozone such that the ozone is substantially immediately available for use during a first wash stage of the washing machine.

12. The system for controlling the supply of ozone to the washing machine according to claim 5, wherein the system is equipped with an indicator which is only activated once substantially all super bugs, germs and bacteria, contained within laundry, were killed.

The system for controlling the supply of ozone to the washing machine according to claim 5, wherein the system is equipped with at least one light which only illuminates once the ozone exhaust sensor senses that the gas sample from the washing machine has an ozone concentration in excess of 1.0 parts per million and thereby provides a visual indication that substantially all super bugs, germs and bacteria, contained within the laundry being washed, were killed by the ozone.

14. The system for controlling the supply of ozone to the washing machine according to claim 5, wherein the system is equipped with an indicator which indicates a presence of the ozone within the internal drum of the washing machine during operation of the washing machine.

The system for controlling the supply of ozone to the washing machine according to claim 5, wherein the system is equipped with first and second lights, and, during operation of the system, the first light remains illuminated until the ozone exhaust sensor senses that the gas sample, from the washing machine, has an ozone concentration in excess of 1.0 parts per million and, upon the ozone exhaust sensor sensing that the concentration of the ozone, in the gas sample from the washing machine, is in excess of 1.0 parts per million for a desired duration of time, the system then illuminates the second light to provide a visual indication that substantially all super bugs, germs and bacteria, contained within the laundry being washed in the washing machine, were killed, and

the system resets and only illuminates the first light each time a door of the washing machine is opened.

A system for controlling a supply of ozone for laundering clothing, the system comprising a plurality of washing machines, at least one ozone generator for producing a supply of ozone to the plurality of washing machines, and an air supply device for supplying air to the at least one ozone generator for producing the ozone, and each respective washing machine of the plurality of washing machines comprising:

an internal drum for containing both laundry to be washed and a quantity of water;

a respective ozone withdrawing outlet for obtaining a gas sample of the respective washing machine for determining an ozone concentration of the gas within the respective washing machine;

a respective ozone exhaust sensor, coupled with the respective ozone outlet, for sensing a concentration of ozone in the gas sample of the respective washing machine during operation thereof;

at least one controller for controlling a flow of ozone from the at east one ozone generator to the respective washing machine;

the at least one controller including a temporary interrupt mechanism coupling the respective ozone exhaust sensor to the at least one ozone generator, the at least one controller being configured for;

(1) temporarily interrupting the supply of the ozone by the at least one ozone generator to the respective washing machine in an event that the concentration of ozone, of the gas sample from the respective washing machine, exceeds a desired level of at least 1.0 parts per million,

(2) continuing interruption of the supply of the ozone, to the respective washing machine, until the respective ozone exhaust sensor again detects that the concentration of the ozone, of the gas sample of the respective washing machine, is below the desired level; and

(3) permitting further supply of ozone by the at least one ozone generator to the respective washing machine so that additional ozone continues to be supplied, as necessary, to the respective washing machine once the concentration of the ozone, of the gas sample of the respective washing machine, is detected by the respective ozone exhaust sensor as falling below the desired level; and

an area ozone level sensor for sensing a concentration of ozone within a room accommodating the plurality of washing machines, the area ozone level sensor being located within the room for monitoring an ozone concentration of the room, and a relay coupling the area ozone level sensor to the at least one ozone generator for interrupting production of ozone when the concentration of ozone in the room exceeds a desired area level of at least 0.1 parts per million.

The system for controlling the supply of ozone according to claim 16, wherein at least one of the respective ozone exhaust sensor and the area level ozone sensor is a variable sensor which issues a variable command to the at least one ozone generator for proportionally decreasing the amount of ozone being supplied to the plurality of washing machines so as to maintain the ozone, contained within the room and contained within each of the plurality of washing machines, below the desired level.

The system for controlling the supply of ozone according to claim 17, wherein the at least one ozone generator produces about 4 grams per hour of ozone at an ozone concentration of about 5% ozone so that ozone is substantially immediately available for use during a first wash stage of each of the plurality of washing machines.

The system for controlling the supply of ozone according to claim 16, wherein each of the plurality of washing machines of the system are equipped with an indicator which is only activated once substantially all of super bugs, germs and bacteria, contained within the laundry to be washed by the respective washing machine, were killed.

The system for controlling the supply of ozone according to claim 16, wherein each of the plurality of washing machines is equipped with at least one light which only becomes illuminated once the respective ozone exhaust sensor senses that the gas sample, from the respective washing machine, has an ozone concentration in excess of 1.0 parts per million to provide a visual indication that substantially all super bugs, germs and bacteria, contained within the laundry to be washed, were killed.
