Abstract
A cleanable shoe-type diverter belt having narrow translatable pushers forming article-diverting shoes covering little or none of the belt'"'"'s conveying surface. Cam followers on the shoes below the pushers follow selectively actuated or fixed guides under the belt to translate the shoes along a transverse track across the width of the belt. Cam followers of different lengths are programmed to follow different paths by multi-level guides.

21. A conveyor belt comprising:
-
a top side and an opposite bottom side; a plurality of parallel tracks extending transversely across the width of the conveyor belt; a plurality of pushers arranged to ride along the tracks, wherein the pushers include upper article-engaging portions above the top side of the conveyor belt and cam followers below the bottom side for contact with guides below the conveyor belt; wherein a first group of the plurality of pushers are shorter than a second group of the plurality of pushers such that the cam followers of the first group of pushers extend below the bottom side a first distance and the cam followers of the second group of pushers extend below the bottom side a greater second distance.

22. A diverting conveyor comprising:
-
a conveyor belt advancing upstream to downstream and having a plurality of pushers arranged to translate transversely across the width of the conveyor belt along spaced apart paths, wherein the pushers include cam followers extending below the conveyor belt; a retractable guide disposed below the conveyor belt and having a guide surface extending diagonally across the width of the conveyor from an upstream end to an opposite downstream end, wherein the guide surface has an upper edge at a first level inward from the upstream end transitioning to a higher second level at a position between the upstream and downstream ends and wherein the guide surface is selectively movable between a first raised position in which the upper edge of the guide surface at the first level is high enough to intercept the cam followers to translate the pushers across the conveyor belt and a second lowered position in which the upper edge of the guide surface at the first level is below the cam followers to avoid translating the pushers; wherein the retractable guide has a hinge at the downstream end that allows the retractable guide to pivot between the first raised position and the second lowered position.

23. A diverting conveyor comprising:
-
a conveyor belt advancing in a conveying direction and having a plurality of pushers arranged to translate transversely across the width of the conveyor belt along paths regularly spaced apart a distance defining a pusher pitch, wherein the pushers include cam followers extending below the conveyor belt; a cam wheel disposed below the conveyor belt and rotatable on an axis perpendicular to the plane of the conveyor belt, the cam wheel including; a plurality of lobes regularly spaced around the periphery of the cam wheel to match the pusher pitch, wherein a first plurality of the lobes are cam paddles that receive a driving force from the cam followers to rotate the cam wheel and at least one of the lobes is a diverting cam having a leading edge that extends radially outward farther than the cam paddles to engage the cam follower of a pusher and translate the pusher while the cam follower of the next pusher forward is pushing on one of the cam paddles to rotate the cam wheel as the conveyor belt advances. - View Dependent Claims (24)
