Abstract

A cleaning appliance of the canister type includes separating apparatus for separating dirt from a dirt-bearing fluid flow, a floor engaging rolling assembly, and a steering mechanism for steering the cleaning appliance as it is maneuver over a floor surface and for pivoting the separating apparatus relative to the rolling assembly.

Claims

1. A canister vacuum cleaner comprising a floor engaging rolling assembly, a separating apparatus located in front of the rolling assembly for separating dirt from a dirt-bearing fluid flow, and a steering mechanism for steering the vacuum cleaner as it is manoeuvred over a floor surface and for effecting relative pivotal movement between the separating apparatus and the rolling assembly about a pivot axis, wherein the separating apparatus has a longitudinal axis inclined at an acute angle to the pivot axis so that the separating apparatus swings from side to side as the vacuum cleaner is manoeuvred over the floor surface.

2. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1, wherein the steering mechanism comprises a support for supporting the base of the separating apparatus, and the longitudinal axis of the separating apparatus is inclined at the acute angle to the pivot axis when the separating apparatus is located on the support.

3. The vacuum cleaner of claim 2, wherein the separating apparatus comprises a substantially cylindrical outer wall extending around the longitudinal axis, the wall being supported by a curved support surface of the support.

4. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1, wherein the separating apparatus comprises a handle to facilitate removal of the separating apparatus from the vacuum cleaner, and the handle is moveable between a stowed position and a deployed position.

5. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1, wherein the separating apparatus comprises a wall and a base member, the base member being held in a closed position by a catch and being pivotably connected to the wall.

6. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1, wherein the pivot axis is substantially vertical when the vacuum cleaner is located on a horizontal floor surface.

7. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1, wherein the separating apparatus is a cyclonic separating apparatus.

8. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1, wherein the steering mechanism comprises an inlet duct for conveying the fluid flow to the separating apparatus, and the inlet duct is moveable relative to the rolling assembly.

9. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1, wherein the rolling assembly comprises two wheels and a motor driven fan unit for drawing the fluid flow into the separating apparatus, the motor driven fan unit being interposed between the two wheels.

10. A canister vacuum cleaner comprising a floor engaging rolling assembly, a separating apparatus for separating dirt from a dirt-bearing fluid flow, and a steering mechanism for steering the vacuum cleaner as it is manoeuvred over a floor surface and for effecting relative pivotal movement between the separating apparatus and the rolling assembly about a pivot axis, wherein the separating apparatus is moveable relative to the rolling assembly about an arc no greater than 90 degrees.

11. The vacuum cleaner of claim 10, wherein the separating apparatus has a longitudinal axis inclined at an acute angle to the pivot axis.

12. The vacuum cleaner of claim 10, wherein the pivot axis is substantially vertical when the vacuum cleaner is located on a horizontal floor surface.

13. The vacuum cleaner of claim 10, wherein the separating apparatus comprises a wall and a base member, the base member being held in a closed position by a catch and being pivotably connected to the wall.

14. The vacuum cleaner of claim 10, wherein the separating apparatus comprises a handle to facilitate removal of the separating apparatus from the vacuum cleaner, and the handle is moveable between a stowed position and a deployed position.

15. The vacuum cleaner of claim 10, wherein the separating apparatus is a cyclonic separating apparatus.

16. The vacuum cleaner of claim 10, wherein the steering mechanism comprises an inlet duct for conveying the fluid flow to the separating apparatus, and the inlet duct is moveable relative to the rolling assembly.

17. The vacuum cleaner of claim 10, wherein the rolling assembly comprises two wheels and a motor driven fan unit for drawing the fluid flow into the separating apparatus, the motor driven fan unit being interposed between the two wheels.

18. A canister vacuum cleaner comprising a floor engaging rolling assembly, a separating apparatus for separating dirt from a dirt-bearing fluid flow, and a steering mechanism for steering the vacuum cleaner as it is manoeuvred over a floor surface and for effecting relative pivotal movement between the separating apparatus and the rolling assembly about a pivot axis, wherein the separating apparatus has a longitudinal axis inclined at an acute angle to the pivot axis so that the separating apparatus swings from side to side as the vacuum cleaner is manoeuvred over the floor surface.

19. The vacuum cleaner of claim 18, wherein the acute angle is in the range from 30 to 70 degrees.

20. The vacuum cleaner of claim 18, wherein the pivot axis is substantially vertical when the vacuum cleaner is located on a horizontal floor surface.

21. The vacuum cleaner of claim 18, wherein the separating apparatus comprises a cylindrical outer wall and a base member, the base member being held in a closed position by a catch and being pivotably connected to the outer wall.

22. The vacuum cleaner of claim 18, wherein the separating apparatus comprises a handle to facilitate removal of the separating apparatus from the vacuum cleaner, and the handle is moveable between a stowed position and a deployed position.

23. The vacuum cleaner of claim 18, wherein the separating apparatus is a cyclonic separating apparatus.

24. The vacuum cleaner of claim 18, wherein the steering mechanism comprises an inlet duct for conveying the fluid flow to the separating apparatus, and the inlet duct is moveable relative to the rolling assembly.

25. The vacuum cleaner of claim 18, wherein the rolling assembly comprises two wheels and a motor driven fan unit for drawing the fluid flow into the separating apparatus, the motor driven fan unit being interposed between the two wheels.

26. A canister vacuum cleaner comprising a floor engaging rolling assembly, a cyclonic separating apparatus located in front of the rolling assembly for separating dirt from a dirt-bearing fluid flow, and a steering mechanism for steering the vacuum cleaner as it is manoeuvred over a floor surface and for effecting relative pivotal movement between the separating apparatus and the rolling assembly about a pivot axis, wherein the pivot axis is substantially vertical when the vacuum cleaner is located on a horizontal floor surface, the separating apparatus has a longitudinal axis inclined at an acute angle to the pivot axis, and the separating apparatus is moveable relative to the rolling assembly about an arc no greater than 90 degrees.

27. A canister vacuum cleaner comprising a floor engaging rolling assembly, a separating apparatus located in front of the rolling assembly for separating dirt from a dirt-bearing fluid flow, and a mechanism for effecting relative pivotal movement between the separating apparatus and the rolling assembly about a pivot axis, wherein the separating apparatus has a longitudinal axis inclined at an acute angle to the pivot axis.

28. The vacuum cleaner of claim 27, wherein the pivot axis is substantially vertical when the vacuum cleaner is located on a horizontal floor surface.

29. The vacuum cleaner of claim 27, wherein the separating apparatus comprises a wall and a base member, the base member being held in a closed position by a catch and being pivotably connected to the wall.

30. The vacuum cleaner of claim 27, wherein the separating apparatus comprises a handle to facilitate removal of the separating apparatus from the vacuum cleaner, and the handle is moveable between a stowed position and a deployed position.

31. The vacuum cleaner of claim 27, wherein the separating apparatus is a cyclonic separating apparatus.

32. The vacuum cleaner of claim 27, wherein the mechanism comprises an inlet duct for conveying the fluid flow to the separating apparatus, and the inlet duct is moveable relative to the rolling assembly.

33. The vacuum cleaner of claim 27, wherein the rolling assembly comprises two wheels and a motor driven fan unit for drawing the fluid flow into the separating apparatus, the motor driven fan unit being interposed between the two wheels.

34. A canister vacuum cleaner comprising a floor engaging rolling assembly, a separating apparatus for separating dirt from a dirt-bearing fluid flow, and a mechanism for effecting relative pivotal movement between the separating apparatus and the rolling assembly about a pivot axis, wherein the separating apparatus is moveable relative to the rolling assembly about an arc no greater than 90 degrees.

35. The vacuum cleaner of claim 34, wherein the pivot axis is substantially vertical when the vacuum cleaner is located on a horizontal floor surface.

36. The vacuum cleaner of claim 34, wherein the separating apparatus has a longitudinal axis inclined at an acute angle to the pivot axis.

37. The vacuum cleaner of claim 34, wherein the separating apparatus comprises a wall and a base member, the base member being held in a closed position by a catch and being pivotably connected to the wall.

38. The vacuum cleaner of claim 34, wherein the separating apparatus comprises a handle to facilitate removal of the separating apparatus from the vacuum cleaner, and the handle is moveable between a stowed position and a deployed position.

39. The vacuum cleaner of claim 34, wherein the separating apparatus is a cyclonic separating apparatus.

40. The vacuum cleaner of claim 34, wherein the mechanism comprises an inlet duct for conveying the fluid flow to the separating apparatus, and the inlet duct is moveable relative to the rolling assembly.

41. The vacuum cleaner of claim 34, wherein the rolling assembly comprises two wheels and a motor driven fan unit for drawing the fluid flow into the separating apparatus, the motor driven fan unit being interposed between the two wheels.

42. A canister vacuum cleaner comprising a floor engaging rolling assembly, a separating apparatus for separating dirt from a dirt-bearing fluid flow, and a mechanism for effecting relative pivotal movement between the separating apparatus and the rolling assembly about a pivot axis, wherein the separating apparatus has a longitudinal axis inclined at an acute angle to the pivot axis so that the separating apparatus swings from side to side.

43. The vacuum cleaner of claim 42, wherein the acute angle is in the range from 30 to 70 degrees.

44. The vacuum cleaner of claim 42, wherein the pivot axis is substantially vertical when the vacuum cleaner is located on a horizontal floor surface.

45. The vacuum cleaner of claim 42, wherein the separating apparatus comprises a cylindrical outer wall and a base member, the base member being held in a closed position by a catch and being pivotably connected to the outer wall.

46. The vacuum cleaner of claim 42, wherein the separating apparatus comprises a handle to facilitate removal of the separating apparatus from the vacuum cleaner, and the handle is moveable between a stowed position and a deployed position.

47. The vacuum cleaner of claim 42, wherein the separating apparatus is a cyclonic separating apparatus.

48. The vacuum cleaner of claim 42, wherein the mechanism comprises an inlet duct for conveying the fluid flow to the separating apparatus, and the inlet duct is moveable relative to the rolling assembly.

49. The vacuum cleaner of claim 42, wherein the rolling assembly comprises two wheels and a motor driven fan unit for drawing the fluid flow into the separating apparatus, the motor driven fan unit being interposed between the two wheels.

50. A canister vacuum cleaner comprising a floor engaging rolling assembly, a cyclonic separating apparatus located in front of the rolling assembly for separating dirt from a dirt-bearing fluid flow, and a mechanism for effecting relative pivotal movement between the separating apparatus and the rolling assembly about a pivot axis, wherein the pivot axis is substantially vertical when the vacuum cleaner is located on a horizontal floor surface, the separating apparatus has a longitudinal axis inclined at an acute angle to the pivot axis, and the separating apparatus is moveable relative to the rolling assembly about an arc no greater than 90 degrees.

51. A canister vacuum cleaner comprising a floor engaging rolling assembly, a separating apparatus located in front of the rolling assembly for separating dirt from a dirt-bearing fluid flow, and a steering mechanism for steering the vacuum cleaner as it is manoeuvred over a floor surface and for effecting relative pivotal movement between the separating apparatus and the rolling assembly about a pivot axis, wherein the separating apparatus is moveable relative to the rolling assembly about an arc no greater than 90 degrees.

52. A canister vacuum cleaner comprising a floor engaging rolling assembly, a separating apparatus located in front of the rolling assembly for separating dirt from a dirt-bearing fluid flow, and a mechanism for effecting relative pivotal movement between the separating apparatus and the rolling assembly about a pivot axis, wherein the separating apparatus is moveable relative to the rolling assembly about an arc no greater than 90 degrees.
