Abstract

The present invention relates to target acquisition and related devices, and more particularly to telescopic gunsights and associated equipment used to achieve shooting accuracy at, for example, close ranges, medium ranges and extreme ranges at stationary and moving targets.

Claims

1. A ballistics calculator, comprising:

a) a processor;

b) a display screen; and

c) a computer readable medium having stored thereon a ballistics computer program that directs said processor to analyze input information and generate aiming information for a target acquisition device with a reticle, said program configured to receive input information regarding;

1) said reticle, comprising;

i) a primary horizontal cross-hair;

ii) a primary vertical cross-hair that intersects said primary horizontal cross-hair;

iii) two or more vertical lead markings upon said primary horizontal cross-hair;

iv) two or more horizontal line rangefinder markings above said vertical lead markings to the left of said primary vertical cross-hair and two or more horizontal line rangefinder markings above said vertical lead markings to the right of said primary vertical cross-hair;

v) two or more evenly spaced simultaneously visible straight line secondary horizontal cross-hairs on said primary vertical cross-hair below said primary horizontal cross-hair; and

vi) two or more simultaneously visible straight line secondary vertical cross-hairs on said simultaneously visible straight line secondary horizontal cross-hairs below said primary horizontal cross-hair, wherein an intersection of at least one of said two or more simultaneously visible straight line secondary vertical cross-hairs and at least one of said two or more simultaneously visible straight line secondary horizontal cross-hairs provides an aiming point; and

2) one or more of;

i) external conditions;

ii) a firearm;

iii) a projectile;

iv) a target acquisition device;

v) a shooter;

vi) the relation of said shooter and a target, wherein said target can be greater than 1000 yards from the shooter; and

vii) a ballistics drag model and ballistic coefficient; and

wherein said ballistics computer program when in use directs said processor to calculate aiming information using said input information, and wherein said ballistics computer program when in use directs said processor to display said aiming information on said display screen of said ballistics calculator.

2. The ballistics calculator of claim 1, wherein said reticle is as shown in FIGS. 54a to 54q.

3. The ballistics calculator of claim 1, wherein said reticle is as shown in FIG. 54r.

4. The ballistics calculator of claim 1, wherein said reticle is as shown in FIG. 54s.

5. The ballistics calculator of claim 1, wherein a fit between a dimension of an image of an object of known size within a predetermined distance of one or more said horizontal line rangefinder markings above said primary horizontal cross-hair provides a range to said object.

6. The ballistics calculator of claim 5, wherein said range indicates one or more said secondary horizontal cross-hairs for elevation correction.

7. The ballistics calculator of claim 1, further comprising a horizontal line rangefinder marking that intersects said primary vertical cross-hair at a position above said primary horizontal cross-hair.

8. The ballistics calculator of claim 1, wherein said primary horizontal cross-hair is an interrupted straight line and wherein said primary vertical cross-hair is an interrupted straight line, further comprising an aiming dot at an interrupted intersection of said primary horizontal cross-hair and said primary vertical cross-hair.

9. The ballistics calculator of claim 1, wherein two or more of said secondary horizontal cross hairs are of equal length, and two or more of said secondary horizontal cross-hairs are of unequal length.

10. The ballistics calculator of claim 1, wherein two or more of said horizontal line rangefinder markings are of unequal distance above said primary horizontal cross hair, and two or more of said horizontal line rangefinder markings are of equal distance above said primary horizontal cross-hair.

The ballistics calculator of claim 1, wherein said reticle comprises an aiming point at an intersection of said primary vertical cross-hair and said primary horizontal cross-hair, wherein said ballistics computer program provides an output on said display of a number of clicks an elevation knob and a windage knob should be turned to adjust a position of said target acquisition device relative to said firearm such that said intersection of said primary vertical cross-hair and said primary horizontal cross-hair is the aiming point for striking said target.

12. The ballistics calculator of claim 1, wherein said ballistics computer program directs said processor to display an image of said reticle on said display screen.

13. The ballistics calculator of claim 12, wherein said image of said reticle is as shown in FIGS. 54a to 54q.

14. The ballistics calculator of claim 12, wherein said image of said reticle is as shown in FIG. 54r.

15. The ballistics calculator of claim 12, wherein said image of said reticle is as shown in FIG. 54s.

16. The ballistics calculator of claim 1, wherein said ballistics computer program is configured to receive input information regarding said external conditions, said firearm, said projectile, said target acquisition device, said shooter, said relation of said shooter to said target, wherein said target can be greater than 1000 yards from said shooter, and said ballistics drag model and ballistic coefficient.

17. The ballistics calculator of claim 1, wherein:

a) said information regarding said external conditions is selected from one or more of temperature, barometric pressure, relative humidity, wind-speed, wind direction, hemisphere, latitude, azimuth and altitude;

b) said information regarding said firearm is selected from one or more of the rate and direction of barrel twist;

c) said information regarding said projectile is selected from one or more of projectile weight, projectile caliber, and the muzzle velocity of said projectile;

d) said information regarding said target acquisition device is selected from one or more of type of reticle, power of magnification, focal plane of function, the elevation between said target acquisition device and said firearm, elevation unit, lead unit, and the range at which said target acquisition device was zeroed using said firearm and said projectile;

e) said information regarding said relation between said shooter and said target is selected from one or more of the distance between said shooter and said target, and the speed and direction of movement of said target relative to said shooter; and

f) said ballistics drag model and ballistic coefficient.

18. The ballistics calculator of claim 1, wherein said ballistics calculator is a device comprising a Global Position System (GPS) device.

19. The ballistics calculator of claim 1, wherein said ballistics calculator is a telephone.

20. A ballistics computer program on a computer readable medium that directs a processor to analyze input information and to generate aiming information for a target acquisition device with a reticle, said program configured to receive input information regarding:

a) said reticle, comprising;

i) a primary horizontal cross-hair;

ii) a primary vertical cross-hair that intersects said primary horizontal cross-hair;

iii) two or more vertical lead markings upon said primary horizontal cross hair;

iv) two or more horizontal line rangefinder markings above said vertical lead markings to the left of said primary vertical cross-hair and two or more horizontal line rangefinder markings above said vertical lead markings to the right of said primary vertical cross-hair;

v) two or more evenly spaced simultaneously visible straight line secondary horizontal cross-hairs on said primary vertical cross-hair below said primary horizontal cross-hair; and

vi) two or more simultaneously visible straight line secondary vertical cross-hairs on said simultaneously visible straight line secondary horizontal cross-hairs below said primary horizontal cross-hair, wherein an intersection of at least one of said two or more simultaneously visible straight line secondary vertical cross-hairs and at least one of said two or more simultaneously visible straight line secondary horizontal cross-hairs provides an aiming point; and

b) one or more of;

1) external conditions;

2) a firearm being;

3) a projectile;

4) a target acquisition device;

5) a shooter;

6) the relation of said shooter and a target, wherein said target can be greater than 1000 yards from said shooter; and

7) a ballistics drag model and ballistic coefficient; and

wherein said ballistics computer program when in use directs said processor to calculate aiming information using said input information, and wherein said ballistics computer program when in use directs said processor to display said aiming information.

21. The ballistics computer program of claim 20, wherein said reticle is as shown in FIGS. 54a to 54q.

22. The ballistics computer program of claim 20, wherein said reticle is as shown in FIG. 54r.

23. The ballistics computer program of claim 20, wherein said reticle is as shown in FIG. 54s.

24. The ballistics computer program of claim 20, wherein said ballistics computer program is configured to receive input information regarding said external conditions, said firearm, said projectile, said target acquisition device, said shooter, said relation of said shooter to said target, wherein said target can be greater than 1000 yards from said shooter, and said ballistics drag model and ballistic coefficient.

25. The ballistics computer program of claim 20, wherein:

a) said information regarding said external conditions is selected from one or more of temperature, barometric pressure, relative humidity, wind-speed, wind direction, hemisphere, latitude, azimuth and altitude;

b) said information regarding said firearm is selected from one or more of the rate and direction of barrel twist;

c) said information regarding said projectile is selected from one or more of projectile weight, projectile caliber, and the muzzle velocity of said projectile;

d) said information regarding said target acquisition device is selected from one or more of type of reticle, power of magnification, focal plane of function, the elevation between said target acquisition device and said firearm, elevation unit, lead unit, and the range at which said target acquisition device was zeroed using said firearm and said projectile;

e) said information regarding said relation between said shooter and said target is selected from one or more of the distance between said shooter and said target, and the speed and direction of movement of said target relative to said shooter; and

f) said ballistics drag model and ballistic coefficient.

26. The ballistics computer program of claim 20, wherein said display of said aiming information is an image of said reticle.

27. The ballistics computer program of claim 26, wherein said image comprises FIGS. 54a to 54q.

28. The ballistics computer program of claim 26, wherein said image comprises FIG. 54r.
