Systems and methods for performing peritoneal dialysis
First Claim
1. A system for providing peritoneal dialysis to a patient, the system comprising:
- a catheter having an inflow lumen and an outflow lumen for communication with the patient'"'"'s peritoneal cavity;
a fluid circuit in fluid communication with the catheter, the fluid circuit capable of circulating a therapy fluid into, throughout and out of a peritoneal cavity of the patient and including a first fluid line in fluid communication with a first pump chamber, and a second fluid line in fluid communication with a second pump chamber;
a supply of a dialysate;
a chamber coupled fluidly via a supply line to the dialysate supply and the fluid circuit through which the dialysate can be fed at a feed rate into the fluid circuit;
a drain valve;
a cycler including a plurality of valves operated with the first and second pump chambers to pump the dialysate into the fluid circuit and to circulate the dialysate along the fluid circuit at a circulation rate to remove a therapeutic effective amount of solutes and excess water from the patient; and
a discharge fluid path fluidly coupled to the fluid circuit, the cycler opening the drain valve to discharge therapy fluid from the fluid circuit through the discharge fluid path without removing toxins from the therapy fluid via an extracorporeal filtration system, wherein the therapy fluid is discharged at a discharge rate effective to cause the therapy fluid to be circulated a plurality of times along the fluid circuit prior to discharge.

Abstract
Systems and methods for providing multiple pass continuous flow dialysis therapy are provided. The present invention includes a fluid circuit connected to a patient via a catheter thereby defining a fluid loop along which a therapy fluid including a dialysate can be continuously circulated into, through and out of a peritoneal cavity of a patient to remove a therapeutically effective amount of excess water and solutes including uremic toxins. The feed rate and discharge rate of therapy fluid into the fluid loop can be controllably regulated in proportion to the circulation rate of fluid in the fluid loop such that the therapy fluid can pass a multiple number of times along the fluid loop prior to discharge.
