Abstract

A computational device energizes, at different times, a first set of display elements in a display in accordance with differing values and/or display parameters in response to differing energy management requirements.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

(a) energizing, by a framework and at a first time, a first set of display elements in at least one display in accordance with a first value in a set of display parameters;

(b) determining, by a framework, at a later second time, and based on a first value of a sensed electronic storage device (ESD) parameter, to reduce energy usage of the first set of display elements;

(c) in response to step (b), energizing, by the framework, the first set of display elements in accordance with a second value in the set of display parameters, the first and second values in the set of display parameters being different, whereby a first level of energy/unit area used by the first display elements at the first time is more than a second level of energy/unit area used by the first display elements in response to the energizing step (c);

(d) determining, by a framework, at a later third time, and based on a second value of a sensed ESD parameter, the first and second values of the sensed ESD parameter being different, to reduce further energy usage of the first set of display elements; and

(e) in response to step (d), energizing, by the framework, the first set of display elements in accordance with a third value in the set of display parameters, the second and third values in the set of display parameters being different, whereby a third level of energy/unit area used by the first display elements in response to the energizing step (e) is less than the second level of energy/unit area used by the first display elements in response to the energizing step (c).

The method of claim 1, wherein the ESD parameter is one or more of ESD voltage, current in and/or out of the ESD, ESD capacitance, ESD inductance, ESD current drain rate, ESD current discharge rate, ESD temperature, ESD state of charge, ESD depth of discharge, and ESD state of health and wherein the set of display parameters comprises one or more values for one or more of luminance, brightness, intensity, aspect ratio, viewable image size, display resolution, refresh rate, response time, contrast ratio, and delta-E.

The method of claim 2, wherein a second set of display elements are energized during steps (a)-(e), in accordance with a fourth value in a second set of display parameters, the fourth value being substantially the same as the first value but different from the second and third values, whereby a fourth level of energy/unit area used by the second set of display elements during each of energizing steps (c) and (e) is more than the second and third levels of energy/unit area used by the first display elements in response to the energizing steps (c) and (e).

The method of claim 3, wherein the first, second, third, and fourth values are associated with a common display parameter, wherein the first and second sets of display elements used approximately the same amount of energy/unit area before the energizing step (c) and wherein the second level of energy/unit area is no more than about 85% of the first level of energy/unit area.

The method of claim 3, wherein the first, second, third, and fourth values are associated with a common display parameter, wherein the at least one display comprises first and second displays, wherein the first display elements are in the first display and the second display elements are in the second display, wherein each of the second and third values is no more than about 75% of each of the first and fourth values, and wherein each of the second and third levels of energy/unit area is no more than about 75% of each of the first and fourth levels of energy/unit area.

The method of claim 3, wherein the first, second, third, and fourth values are associated with a common display parameter, wherein the at least one display comprises first and second displays, wherein the first and second display elements are in a common display, wherein, in at least one of energizing steps (c) and (e), at least most of the first display elements have a black color while at least most of the second display elements have a non-black color, and wherein each of the second and third levels of energy/unit area is no more than about 50% of each of the first and fourth levels of energy/unit area.

The method of claim 1, wherein during energizing step (c) a first display parameter has the second value and a second display parameter has a fourth value, wherein the first set of display elements in step (a) are energized in accordance with the fourth value, wherein during energizing step (e) the second display parameter has the third value, the third and fourth values being different.

8. A tangible and non-transient computer readable medium, comprising microprocessor executable instructions that, when executed:

(a) energize, at a first time, a first set of display elements in at least one display in accordance with a first value in a set of display parameters;

(b) determine, at a later second time, and based on a first value of a sensed electronic storage device (ESD) parameter, to reduce energy usage of the first set of display elements;

(c) in response to step (b), energize the first set of display elements in accordance with a second value in the set of display parameters, the first and second values in the set of display parameters being different, whereby a first level of energy/unit area used by the first display elements at the first time is more than a second level of energy/unit area used by the first display elements in response to the energizing step (c);

(d) determine, at a later third time, and based on a second value of a sensed ESD parameter, the first and second values of the sensed ESD parameter being different, to reduce further energy usage of the first set of display elements; and

(e) in response to step (d), energize the first set of display elements in accordance with a third value in the set of display parameters, the second and third values in the set of display parameters being different, whereby a third level of energy/unit area used by the first display elements in response to the energizing step (e) is less than the second level of energy/unit area used by the first display elements in response to the energizing step (c).

The medium of claim 8, wherein the ESD parameter is one or more of ESD voltage, current in and/or out of the ESD, ESD capacitance, ESD inductance, ESD current drain rate, ESD current discharge rate, ESD temperature, ESD state of charge, ESD depth of discharge, and ESD state of health and wherein the set of display parameters comprises one or more values for one or more of luminance, brightness, intensity, aspect ratio, viewable image size, display resolution, refresh rate, response time, contrast ratio, and delta-E.

The medium of claim 9, wherein a second set of display elements are energized during steps (a)-(e), in accordance with a fourth value in a second set of display parameters, the fourth value being substantially the same as the first value but different from the second and third values, whereby a fourth level of energy/unit area used by the second set of display elements during each of energizing steps (c) and (e) is more than the second and third levels of energy/unit area used by the first display elements in response to the energizing steps (c) and (e).

The medium of claim 10, wherein the first, second, third, and fourth values are associated with a common display parameter, wherein the first and second sets of display elements used approximately the same amount of energy/unit area before the energizing step (c) and wherein the second level of energy/unit area is no more than about 85% of the first level of energy/unit area.

The medium of claim 10, wherein the first, second, third, and fourth values are associated with a common display parameter, wherein the at least one display comprises first and second displays, wherein the first display elements are in the first display and the second display elements are in the second display, wherein each of the second and third values is no more than about 75% of each of the first and fourth values, and wherein each of the second and third levels of energy/unit area is no more than about 75% of each of the first and fourth levels of energy/unit area.

The medium of claim 10, wherein the first, second, third, and fourth values are associated with a common display parameter, wherein the at least one display comprises first and second displays, wherein the first and second display elements are in a common display, wherein, in at least one of energizing steps (c) and (e), at least most of the first display elements have a black color while at least most of the second display elements have a non-black color, and wherein each of the second and third levels of energy/unit area is no more than about 50% of each of the first and fourth levels of energy/unit area.

The medium of claim 8, wherein during energizing step (c) a first display parameter has the second value and a second display parameter has a fourth value, wherein the first set of display elements in step (a) are energized in accordance with the fourth value, wherein during energizing step (e) the second display parameter has the third value, the third and fourth values being different.

15. A computational device, comprising:

a framework operable to;

(a) energize, at a first time, a first set of display elements in at least one display in accordance with a first value in a set of display parameters;

(b) determine, at a later second time, and based on a first value of a sensed electronic storage device (ESD) parameter, to reduce energy usage of the first set of display elements;

(c) in response to step (b), energize the first set of display elements in accordance with a second value in the set of display parameters, the first and second values in the set of display parameters being different, whereby a first level of energy/unit area used by the first display elements at the first time is more than a second level of energy/unit area used by the first display elements in response to the energizing step (c);

(d) determine, at a later third time, and based on a second value of a sensed ESD parameter, the first and second values of the sensed ESD parameter being different, to reduce further energy usage of the first set of display elements; and

(e) in response to step (d), energize the first set of display elements in accordance with a third value in the set of display parameters, the second and third values in the set of display parameters being different, whereby a third level of energy/unit area used by the first display elements in response to the energizing step (e) is less than the second level of energy/unit area used by the first display elements in response to the energizing step (c).

The medium of claim 15, wherein the ESD parameter is one or more of ESD voltage, current in and/or out of the ESD, ESD capacitance, ESD inductance, ESD current drain rate, ESD current discharge rate, ESD temperature, ESD state of charge, ESD depth of discharge, and ESD state of health and wherein the set of display parameters comprises one or more values for one or more of luminance, brightness, intensity, aspect ratio, viewable image size, display resolution, refresh rate, response time, contrast ratio, and delta-E.

The medium of claim 16, wherein a second set of display elements are energized during steps (a)-(e), in accordance with a fourth value in a second set of display parameters, the fourth value being substantially the same as the first value but different from the second and third values, whereby a fourth level of energy/unit area used by the second set of display elements during each of energizing steps (c) and (e) is more than the second and third levels of energy/unit area used by the first display elements in response to the energizing steps (c) and (e).

The device of claim 15, wherein during energizing step (c) a first display parameter has the second value and a second display parameter has a fourth value, wherein the first set of display elements in step (a) are energized in accordance with the fourth value, wherein during energizing step (e) the second display parameter has the third value, the third and fourth values being different.

The device of claim 17, wherein the first, second, third, and fourth values are associated with a common display parameter, wherein the at least one display comprises first and second displays, wherein the first display elements are in the first display and the second display elements are in the second display, wherein each of the second and third values is no more than about 75% of each of the first and fourth values, and wherein each of the second and third levels of energy/unit area is no more than about 75% of each of the first and fourth levels of energy/unit area.

The device of claim 17, wherein the first, second, third, and fourth values are associated with a common display parameter, wherein the at least one display comprises first and second displays, wherein the first and second display elements are in a common display, wherein, in at least one of energizing steps (c) and (e), at least most of the first display elements have a black color while at least most of the second display elements have a non-black color, and wherein each of the second and third levels of energy/unit area is no more than about 50% of each of the first and fourth levels of energy/unit area.

The device of claim 18, wherein the first, second, third, and fourth values are associated with a common display parameter, wherein the first and second sets of display elements used approximately the same amount of energy/unit area before the energizing step (c) and wherein the second level of energy/unit area is no more than about 85% of the first level of energy/unit area.
