Abstract

Implantable medical leads and implantable lead extensions include a shield. The implantable medical lead is coupled to the implantable lead extension. Stimulation electrodes of the implantable medical lead contact stimulation connectors within a housing of the implantable extension to establish a conductive pathway for stimulation signals from filars of the implantable extension to filars of the implantable medical lead. Continuity is established between the shield of the implantable medical lead and the implantable extension by providing a radio frequency conductive pathway within the housing. The radio frequency conductive pathway extends from a shield of the implantable extension to a shield connector that contacts a shield electrode of the implantable medical lead. The radio frequency conductive pathway may have various forms such as a jumper wire or an extension of the shield within the implantable extension.

Claims

1. An implantable medical apparatus, comprising:

an implantable lead extension comprising a non-conductive housing at a distal end of the implantable lead extension that includes an opening, a connector within the opening, and an RF pathway from the connector to a braided shield within the implantable lead extension, the RF pathway comprising the braided shield extended through the housing to contact the connector, the housing comprising a first layer of non-conductive material, with the braided shield being outside of the first layer of non-conductive material, and a second layer of non-conductive material that surrounds the braided shield and the first layer of non-conductive material; and

an implantable lead comprising a shield electrode on a proximal end of the implantable lead that has an RF pathway to a shield within the implantable lead, the implantable lead being positioned within the opening so that the connector of the implantable lead extension contacts the shield electrode of the implantable lead.

2. The implantable medical apparatus of claim 1, wherein the housing further includes stimulation connectors with the connector being distal of the stimulation connectors.

3. The implantable medical apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

a plurality of stimulation connectors within the housing;

a plurality of filars within the extension;

a plurality of conductive stimulation pathways between the plurality of stimulation connectors within the housing and the plurality of filars within the extension, the conductive stimulation pathways being isolated from the RF pathway from the connector to the shield within the implantable lead extension; and

a plurality of electrodes on the proximal end of the implantable lead and in contact with the plurality of connectors within the housing.

4. The implantable medical lead of claim 3, wherein the isolation between the RF pathway and each conductive stimulation pathway within the non-conductive housing is at least a separation of 0.1 millimeters.

5. The implantable medical lead of claim 3, wherein non-conductive material of the non-conductive housing that provides the isolation between the RF pathway and each conductive stimulation pathway has a dielectric constant value between 2 and 10.

6. An implantable lead extension, comprising:

an extension jacket;

a braided shield within the extension jacket; and

a non-conductive housing at a distal end of the extension jacket that includes an opening, a connector within the opening, wherein the braided shield extends from the extension jacket through the housing to the connector and is coupled to the connector, the housing comprising a first layer of non-conductive material, with the braided shield being outside of the first layer of non-conductive material, and a second layer of non-conductive material that surrounds the braided shield and the first layer of non-conductive material.

7. The implantable lead extension of claim 6, further comprising:

a plurality of stimulation connectors within the housing;

a plurality of filars within the extension jacket;

a plurality of conductive stimulation pathways between the plurality of stimulation connectors within the housing and the plurality of filars within the extension jacket, the conductive stimulation pathways being isolated from the braided shield.

8. The implantable lead extension of claim 7, wherein the first layer of non-conductive material surrounds the plurality of stimulation connectors and the plurality of conductive stimulation pathways.

9. The implantable lead extension of claim 7, wherein the isolation between the braided shield and each conductive stimulation pathway within the non-conductive housing is at least a separation of 0.1 millimeters.

10. The implantable lead extension of claim 7, wherein non-conductive material of the non-conductive housing that provides the isolation between the braided shield and each conductive stimulation pathway has a dielectric constant value between 2 and 10.

11. A method of shielding an apparatus comprising an implantable lead coupled to an implantable lead extension, the method comprising:

providing a non-conductive housing at a distal end of the implantable lead extension that includes an opening, a connector within the opening, and a braided shield within the implantable lead extension that extends through the housing to the connector, the housing further including stimulation connectors with the connector being distal of the stimulation connectors, the housing comprising a first layer of non-conductive material, with the braided shield being outside of the first layer of non-conductive material, and a second layer of non-conductive material that surrounds the braided shield and the first layer of non-conductive material;

providing a shield electrode on a proximal end of the implantable lead that is coupled to the braided shield within the housing; and

inserting the proximal end of the implantable lead into the opening to establish contact between the connector of the implantable lead extension and the shield electrode of the implantable lead.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

providing a plurality of conductive stimulation pathways between the stimulation connectors within the housing and a plurality of filars within the extension, the conductive stimulation pathways being isolated from the braided shield within the implantable lead extension; and

providing a plurality of electrodes on the proximal end of the implantable lead and contacting the plurality of electrodes with the connectors within the housing upon inserting the proximal end of the implantable lead into the opening.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

providing a first layer of non-conductive material that surrounds the plurality of stimulation connectors and the plurality of conductive stimulation pathways, wherein providing the braided shield within the housing comprises creating the braided shield outside of the first layer of non-conductive material; and

providing a second layer of non-conductive material that surrounds the braided shield and the first layer of non-conductive material.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein the isolation between the braided shield and each conductive stimulation pathway within the non-conductive housing is at least a separation of 0.1 millimeters.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein non-conductive material of the non-conductive housing that provides the isolation between the braided shield and each conductive stimulation pathway has a dielectric constant value between 2 and 10.
