Abstract

A method and system may manage the driver'"'"'s attention while driving. The driver may be driving using an autonomous driving system or limited-ability autonomous driving system. A steering wheel device may indicate to the driver a level of required supervisory control of a vehicle. The steering wheel device may include indicators to flash lights, vibrate, or provide other indicators. The indicators may have distinct levels of intensity for each level of supervisory control required to safely control a vehicle.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

determining a level of supervisory control of a vehicle required by a driver while the vehicle is employing an autonomous driving system, wherein the required level of supervisory control is determined by the driver'"'"'s response to a prompt; and

indicating, on a steering wheel, the level of supervisory control.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the level of supervisory control of a vehicle is based on external driving conditions.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the level of supervisory control of a vehicle is based on an upcoming driving decision.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the level of supervisory control of a vehicle is based on a level of autonomy employed by an autonomous driving system in the vehicle.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein indicating the level of supervisory control comprises vibrating the steering wheel.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein indicating the level of supervisory control of a vehicle comprises producing a pattern of lights on the steering wheel.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein producing a pattern of lights on the steering wheel comprises producing a distinct color for each distinct level of supervisory control required by the driver.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein producing a pattern of lights on the steering wheel comprises flashing a pattern of lights on the steering wheel at distinct intervals or intensities for each distinct level of supervisory control required by the driver.

9. The method of claim 6, wherein producing a pattern of lights on the steering wheel comprises producing a series of lights that flash at different intervals and frequencies to produce apparent motion.

10. A steering wheel, comprising:

at least one indicator to indicate to a driver a level of sufficient supervisory control over a vehicle;

a processor to control the at least one indicator, based on a level of supervisory control required to safely operate a vehicle while the vehicle is employing an autonomous driving system, wherein the required level of supervisory control is determined by the driver'"'"'s response to a prompt.

11. The steering wheel of claim 10, wherein the level of supervisory control of a vehicle is based on a level of autonomy employed by an autonomous driving system in the vehicle.

12. The steering wheel of claim 10, wherein the at least one indicator comprises one or more lights.

13. The steering wheel of claim 12, wherein the one or more lights produce a distinct color for each distinct level of supervisory control required by the driver.

14. The steering wheel of claim 12, wherein the one or more lights flash at distinct intervals or intensities for each distinct level of supervisory control required by the driver.

15. The steering wheel of claim 12, wherein the one or more lights include a series of lights that flash at different intervals and frequencies to produce apparent motion.

16. A vehicle system comprising:

an autonomous driving system;

at least one indicator on a steering wheel to signal a level of autonomy employed by the autonomous driving system in the vehicle; and

a processor to;

provide a prompt to a driver;

monitor the driver'"'"'s response to the prompt; and

control the indicator'"'"'s intensity based on whether the driver exercises sufficient supervisory control of a vehicle, wherein sufficient supervisory control of a vehicle is determined by the monitored driver'"'"'s response to the prompt.

17. The vehicle system of claim 16, wherein the at least one indicator includes one or more lights.

18. The vehicle system of claim 17, wherein the one or more lights are configured to flash distinct colors, time intervals, or brightness levels based on the level of autonomy employed by the autonomous driving system in the vehicle and whether the driver exercises sufficient supervisory control of a vehicle.

19. The vehicle system of claim 16, wherein the processor is to determine whether the driver exercises sufficient supervisory control of a vehicle based on detected characteristics of a driver.

20. The vehicle system of claim 16, wherein the processor is to increase the indicator'"'"'s intensity if the driver fails to exercise sufficient supervisory control of a vehicle.
