Abstract

A surgical cassette arrangement is provided. The arrangement includes a flow selector valve configured to operate with a handpiece to selectively irrigate and aspirate fluid with respect to an ocular region. The flow selector valve includes at least three ports, with one port fluidly connectable to the handpiece. The arrangement further includes a reservoir fluidly connected to a second port of the flow selector valve via a first flow segment and configured to receive fluid from the flow selector valve, and a collector fluidly connected to a third port of the flow selector valve via a second flow segment and configured to receive fluid from the flow selector valve and from the reservoir. The flow selector valve selectively controls irrigation and aspiration flow to the handpiece and ocular region.

Claims

1. A surgical cassette arrangement coupled with a handpiece, the surgical cassette arrangement comprising:

a surgical cassette, wherein the surgical cassette comprises;

a reservoir configured to hold fluid; and

a flow selector valve arrangement coupled with the handpiece and having a first port and a second port that are each configured to both receive and transmit fluid; and

a collector configured to collect fluid from the surgical cassette;

wherein the first port is coupled with the reservoir through a first fluid pathway within the surgical cassette and the second port is coupled with the collector through a second fluid pathway;

wherein the collector is configured to collect fluid received from the flow selector valve arrangement via the second fluid pathway and from the reservoir via a third fluid pathway.

2. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 1, further comprising a first pump, wherein the first pump is coupled with the flow selector valve arrangement and the collector, and the first pump is configured to move fluid to and from the flow selector valve arrangement.

3. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 2, further comprising a second pump, wherein the second pump is coupled with the reservoir and configured to control fluid flow to and from the reservoir.

4. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 3, further comprising a third pump, wherein said third pump is coupled with the reservoir and the collector;

and

configured to move fluid from the reservoir to the collector.

5. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 4, wherein the third pump comprises a peristaltic pump.

6. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 3, wherein the second pump comprises a venturi pump.

7. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 6, wherein the first pump comprises a peristaltic pump.

8. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 3, further comprising a pressure regulator, wherein the pressure regulator is coupled with the reservoir and configured to generate positive pressure in the reservoir.

9. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 2, further comprising a valve, wherein the valve is coupled with the first pump between said first pump and the handpiece.

10. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 1, wherein said surgical cassette arrangement is configured to operate in connection with an ocular surgical procedure.

11. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 1, wherein said flow selector valve arrangement is controlled by an instrument host configured to select operational parameters based on data received.

12. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 1, wherein the fluid selector valve arrangement is further configured to selectively receive fluid from the first fluid pathway or the second fluid pathway and distribute fluid to an eye via the handpiece.

The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 1, further comprising a fluid source, the fluid source configured to distribute fluid to the handpiece and the flow selector valve arrangement, and wherein the flow selector valve arrangementcomprises a third port fluidly connectable to the fluid source.

14. A surgical cassette arrangement coupled with a handpiece, the surgical cassette arrangement comprising:

a surgical cassette, wherein the surgical cassette comprises;

a flow selector valve configured to operate with the handpiece to selectively irrigate and aspirate fluid with respect to an ocular region, the flow selector valve comprising a first port, a second port, and a third port, wherein the second and third port are each configured to both receive and transmit fluid, with the first port fluidly connectable to the handpiece; and

a reservoir fluidly connected to the second port of the selector valve via a first flow segment within the surgical cassette and configured to receive fluid from the flow selector valve; and

a collector fluidly connected to the third port of the flow selector valve via a second flow segment and configured to receive fluid from the flow selector valve and from the reservoir;

wherein the flow selector valve is configured to selectively control irrigation and aspiration flow to and from the handpiece and ocular region.

15. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 14, further comprising a first pump, wherein the first pump is coupled with the flow selector valve and the collector, and the first pump is configured to distribute fluid through the flow selector valve to the collector.

16. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 15, further comprising a second pump, wherein the second pump is coupled with the reservoir and configured to distribute fluid from the reservoir to the collector.

17. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 15, further comprising a valve, wherein the valve is coupled with the first pump between the first pump and the handpiece.

18. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 14, further comprising a vacuum pump arrangement.

19. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 18, wherein the vacuum pump arrangement comprises a pump.

20. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 19, wherein the pump in the vacuum pump arrangement comprises a venturi pump.

21. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 14, wherein said flow selector valve is controlled by an instrument host configured to select operational parameters based on data received.

22. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 14, further comprising a pressure regulator configured to increase pressure in the reservoir.

23. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 14, further comprising a fluid source, the fluid source configured to distribute fluid to the handpiece and the flow selector valve, and wherein the flow selector valve comprises a fourth port fluidly connectable to the fluid source.

24. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 14, wherein the flow selector valve comprises a multiple valve arrangement.

25. A surgical cassette arrangement fluidly connected with a handpiece, the surgical cassette arrangement comprising:

a surgical cassette, wherein the surgical cassette comprises;

a reservoir configured to hold fluid; and

a flow selector valve arrangement fluidly connected to the handpiece and having a first port and a second port that are each configured to both receive and transmit fluid; and

a collector configured to collect fluid;

wherein the first port is fluidly connected with the reservoir through a first fluid pathway within the surgical cassette and the second port is fluidly connected with the collector through a second fluid pathway;

wherein the collector is configured to collect fluid received from the flow selector valve arrangement via the first fluid pathway and from the reservoir via a third fluid pathway.

26. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 25, further comprising a first pump fluidly connected to the flow selector valve arrangement and the collector, and the first pump is configured to move fluid to and from the flow selector valve.

27. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 26, further comprising a second pump fluidly connected to the reservoir and configured to control fluid flow to and from the reservoir.

28. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 27, further comprising a third pump fluidly connected to the reservoir and the collector;

and is configured to move fluid from the reservoir to the collector.

29. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 27, wherein the first pump comprises a peristaltic pump.

30. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 29, wherein the second pump comprises a venturi pump.

31. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 25, wherein said surgical cassette arrangement is configured to operate in connection with an ocular surgical procedure.

32. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 25, wherein said flow selector valve arrangementis controlled by an instrument host configured to select operational parameters based on data received.

33. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 25, wherein the flow selector valve arrangement is further configured to selectively receive fluid from the first fluid pathway or the second fluid pathway and distribute fluid to an eye via the handpiece.

34. The surgical cassette arrangement of claim 25, further comprising a fluid source, the fluid source configured to distribute fluid to the handpiece and the flow selector valve arrangement, and wherein the flow selector valve arrangement comprises a third port fluidly connectable to the fluid source.
