Abstract

Aspects described herein relate to a network for providing air-to-ground wireless communication in various cells. The network includes a first base station array, each base station of which includes a respective first antenna array defining a directional radiation pattern that is oriented in a first direction, wherein each base station of the first base station array is disposed spaced apart from another base station of the first base station array along the first direction by a first distance. The network also includes a similar second base station array where the second base station array extends substantially parallel to the first base station array and is spaced apart from the first base station array by a second distance to form continuous and at least partially overlapping cell coverage areas between respective base stations of the first and second base station arrays.

Claims

1. A network for providing air-to-ground (ATG) wireless communication in various cells, comprising:

a first base station array, each base station of which includes a respective first antenna array defining a directional radiation pattern that is oriented in a first direction, wherein each base station of the first base station array is disposed spaced apart from another base station of the first base station array along the first direction by a first distance; and

a second base station array, each base station of which includes a respective second antenna array defining a directional radiation pattern that is oriented in the first direction, wherein each base station of the second base station array is disposed spaced apart from another base station of the second base station array along the first direction by the first distance, and wherein the second base station array extends substantially parallel to the first base station array and is spaced apart from the first base station array by a second distance to form continuous and at least partially overlapping cell coverage areas between respective base stations of the first and second base station arrays,

wherein base stations of the first base station array and the second base station array are disposed to be located offset from each other along the first direction by a third distance, and wherein the first distance is less than the second distance.

2. The network of claim 1, wherein the first distance is based at least in part on a distance from the first base station to one or more points where a cell coverage area of the first base station achieves a predetermined altitude.

3. The network of claim 1, wherein the second distance is based at least in part on an achievable cell coverage distance for the first base station and the third base station in a horizontal plane.

The network of claim 1, wherein the directional radiation pattern defined by each of the first and second antenna arrays extends substantially 180 degrees in azimuth centered on the first direction and extends between a first elevation angle and a second elevation angle over at least a predetermined distance that is at least double the first distance to define a semicircular, wedge shaped radiation pattern.

The network of claim 4, wherein a portion of a cell coverage area provided by each base station of the first base station array overlaps a cell coverage area of at least two subsequent base stations of the first base station array at corresponding different altitude ranges in a vertical plane above each respective one of the at least two subsequent base stations such that coverage provided by the first base station array is substantially continuous up to at least a predetermined altitude along the first direction.

6. The network of claim 4, wherein each cell coverage area comprises a number of substantially adjacent sectors providing a substantially semicircular cell coverage area in a horizontal plane.

7. The network of claim 6, wherein the first and second antenna arrays each comprise six antennas each providing one of the substantially adjacent sectors by transmitting signals that cover a substantially 30 degree azimuth and that cover the first elevation angle and the second elevation angle.

8. The network of claim 1, wherein adjacent base stations of each of the first base station array and the second base station array transmit using different frequency channels.

9. The network of claim 1, wherein the first direction substantially correlates to a cardinal direction.

10. The network of claim 1, wherein the first distance is double the third distance.

11. The network of claim 1, wherein the first distance is less than half the second distance.

12. The network of claim 11, wherein the first distance is about 150 kilometers, and the second distance is about 400 kilometers.

13. The network of claim 12, wherein the third distance is about 75 kilometers.

14. The network of claim 1, wherein at least one base station of the first base station array and the second base station array comprises one or more patch antennas to provide an additional cell coverage area in the vertical plane.

15. A network for providing air-to-ground (ATG) wireless communication in various cells, the network comprising a first base station array:

a first base station having a first antenna array providing a directional radiation pattern oriented along a first direction, the directional radiation pattern extending over a predetermined range in azimuth centered on the first direction, and extending between a first elevation angle and a second elevation angle over at least a predetermined distance to define a substantially wedge shaped radiation pattern;

a second base station deployed spaced apart from the first base station by a first distance in the first direction, the second base station having a second antenna array having the same directional radiation pattern as the first antenna array such that coverage areas of the first and second antenna arrays overlap at different altitude ranges moving along the first direction from the second base station; and

a third base station deployed spaced apart from the second base station by the first distance along the first direction, the third base station having a third antenna array having the same directional radiation pattern as the first and second antenna arrays such that coverage areas of the first, second and third antenna arrays overlap at different altitude ranges moving along the first direction from the third base station to achieve continuous coverage to a predetermined altitude.

The network of claim 15, further comprising a second base station array, the second base station array comprising a plurality of base stations aligned along the first direction to extend substantially parallel to the first base station array, the second base station array being spaced apart from the first base station array by a second distance.

17. The network of claim 15, wherein the second distance is more than double the first distance.

18. The network of claim 15, wherein each base station of the second base station array is offset in the first direction relative to a location of each base station of the first base station array by a third distance.

19. The network of claim 18, wherein the first distance is substantially 150 kilometers, the second distance is substantially 400 kilometers.

20. The network of claim 19, wherein the third distance is about 75 kilometers in the first direction.
