Abstract

An apparatus, according to various aspects of the present invention, produces contractions in skeletal muscles of a target to impede locomotion by the target. The apparatus is used with a provided deployment unit that deploys an electrode away from the apparatus. The electrode conducts a current through the target. The apparatus includes a terminal; a producing sub-system for producing an electric arc to warn the target without conducting a current through the target; a conducting sub-system for conducting the current in series through the terminal and through the target; an initiating sub-system for initiating deployment of the electrode; and an operator interface. The operator interface facilitates selecting one or more cartridges of a set of cartridges to provide a stimulus signal to a target and/or display an arc.

Claims

1. An electronic weapon for impeding the locomotion of a human or animal target by stimulating tissue of the target between launched electrodes, the weapon for cooperating with a provided cartridge, the cartridge comprising at least two wire-tethered electrodes and at least two terminals, the electronic weapon comprising:

a bay for receiving the cartridge;

a first user-operated control that does not initiate a launch of the wire-tethered electrodes from the cartridge;

a second user-operated control that initiates a launch function to launch the wire-tethered electrodes of the cartridge toward the target; and

a signal generator that;

if the cartridge is unused, provides an arcing display between the terminals of the cartridge when the first control is operated, the arcing display for warning the target; and

if the cartridge is used, provides a stimulus signal via the wire-tethered electrodes of the cartridge when the second control is operated.

2. The electronic weapon of claim 1 wherein:

the first control comprises a push button control;

the second control comprises a trigger control.

3. The electronic weapon of claim 1 wherein the first control and the second control are arranged for operation by the same finger of an operator to reduce unintended operations of the electronic weapon.

4. The electronic weapon of claim 1 wherein the arcing display comprises a high voltage arc between the at least two terminals.

5. The electronic weapon of claim 1 wherein the arcing display comprises a visual display of light.

6. The electronic weapon of claim 1 wherein the arcing display comprises an audible presentation of sound.

7. The electronic weapon of claim 1 wherein the at least two terminals are positioned proximate to a face of the weapon while the cartridge is positioned in the bay.

8. An electronic weapon for impeding the locomotion of a human or animal target by stimulating tissue of the target between launched electrodes, for warning the target, and for cooperating with one or more provided cartridges, each cartridge comprising at least two wire-tethered electrodes and at least two terminals, the electronic weapon comprising:

two or more bays for receiving a respective cartridge;

a user-operated control that does not initiate a launch of the wire-tethered electrodes from any cartridge; and

a signal generator that, responsive to an operation of the control, provides an arcing display between the terminals of all unused cartridges for warning the target.

9. The weapon of claim 8 wherein:

each bay comprises at least two terminals; and

the terminals of at least one of an unused cartridge and an unused bay provide a current for stimulating target tissue while the terminals are positioned proximate to the target tissue.

10. The weapon of claim 8 wherein the arcing display ionizes air between a first terminal of each unused cartridge and a second terminal of the same unused cartridge.

11. The weapon of claim 8 wherein:

each bay comprises at least two terminals; and

the arc ionizes air between a first terminal of each unused bay and a second terminal of the same unused bay.

12. The weapon of claim 8 further comprising at least two terminals separate from the at least two terminals of all cartridges and all bays, wherein the signal generator provides the arcing display between the two separate terminals when all cartridges are used and no bays are unused.

13. The weapon of claim 8 wherein:

each bay comprises at least two terminals; and

the signal generator responsive to the operation of the control further provides the arcing display between the terminals of all unused bays.

14. An electronic weapon for impeding locomotion of a human or animal target by stimulating tissue of the target between launched electrodes, for warning the target, and for cooperating with one or more provided cartridges, each cartridge comprising at least two wire-tethered electrodes and at least two terminals, the electronic weapon comprising:

two or more bays for receiving a respective cartridge, each bay comprising at least two terminals;

a user-operated control that;

does not initiate a launch of wire-tethered electrodes from any cartridge; and

when operated for a first duration, selects one cartridge of the one or more cartridges as the selected cartridge for launching; and

a signal generator that;

when the user-operated control is operated for a second duration longer than the first duration provides an arcing display between the terminals of all unused cartridges and all unused bays for warning the target.

15. The weapon of claim 14 wherein the terminals of at least one of an unused cartridge and an unused bay provide a current for stimulating target tissue while positioned proximate to the target tissue.

16. The weapon of claim 14 further comprising at least two terminals separate from the at least two terminals of all cartridges and all bays, wherein the signal generator provides the arcing display across the two separate terminals when all cartridges are used and no bays are unused.
