Abstract

Disclosed is a transportable vessel for use in a factory for processing molten metal. The vessel is not connected to a reverbatory furnace and can be moved to different locations in the factory. The vessel includes a transfer conduit in communication with a cavity of the vessel. A molten metal pump can be positioned in the transfer conduit to move molten metal out of an outlet in communication with the transfer conduit and into another vessel without the need to tip or tilt the transportable vessel.

Claims

1. A transportable vessel for retaining and transporting molten metal from one location to another, the vessel not being part of a reverbatory furnace, the vessel including a cavity for retaining molten metal and a transfer conduit in communication with the cavity;

the transfer conduit having a bottom that includes an opening in communication with the cavity, a first section having a first cross-sectional area and a second section above the first section, the second section having a second cross-sectional area that is greater than the first cross-sectional area, and an outlet in fluid communication with the second section and leading out of the transfer conduit;

wherein the first section is configured to receive a molten metal pump rotor;

wherein the outlet is a launder extending from the second section.

2. The transportable vessel of claim 1 that is comprised of refractory material.

3. The transportable vessel of claim 1 that is a ladle.

4. The transportable vessel of claim 1 wherein the cavity is cylindrical.

5. The transportable vessel of claim 1 wherein the launder is between 6″

and 6′

in length.

6. The transportable vessel of claim 5 wherein the launder is formed at a horizontal angle of one or more of the group selected from:

0°

, an angle tilting backwards towards the second section of between 1° and

3°

, an angle tilting backwards towards the second section of between 1° and

10°

.

7. The transportable vessel of claim 1 wherein there is a wall that separates the cavity from the transfer conduit and a channel is formed in the bottom of the wall and allows molten metal to pass from the cavity to the opening.

The transportable vessel of claim 7 that further includes a molten metal pump including a motor, a platform on which the motor rests, a shaft having a first end connected to the motor and a second end connected to a rotor, wherein at least part of the shaft is positioned in the second section and the rotor is positioned in the first section.

9. The transportable vessel of claim 8 wherein the vessel has an upper perimeter, and the transfer conduit has an upper perimeter, and the platform of the molten metal pump is supported by at least the upper perimeter of the transfer conduit in order to support the pump.

10. The transportable vessel of claim 9 wherein the platform of the molten metal pump also rests on at least the upper perimeter of the vessel.

11. The transportable vessel of claim 8 wherein the transfer conduit includes a first wall having a first outer surface and a second wall having a second outer surface, and one side of the platform includes a first centering bracket and the opposite side of the platform includes a second centering bracket;

the first centering bracket being juxtaposed the first outer surface and the second centering bracket being juxtaposed the second outer surface to help center the shaft and rotor in the transfer conduit.

12. The transportable vessel of claim 8 wherein the rotor has a plurality of blades.

13. The transportable vessel of claim 12 wherein each blade is flat.

14. The transportable vessel of claim 12 wherein each blade is a dual-flow blade, with a first, angled portion that moves molten metal upward and a second portion that moves molten metal outward.

15. A method of transporting molten metal from one place in a factory to another, the method comprising the steps of:

(a) placing molten metal into the transportable vessel of claim 8;

(b) moving the transportable vessel from a first location to a second location;

(c) operating the pump to move molten metal out of the outlet and into another vessel.

16. The method according to claim 15 wherein the transportable vessel remains level while the pump is operating.

17. The method according to claim 15 wherein the transportable vessel has a top and the outlet is at the top.

18. The method according to claim 15 wherein the rotor has a plurality of blades.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein each blade is a dual-flow blade, with a first, angled portion that moves molten metal upward and a second portion that moves molten metal outward.

20. The method of claim 18 wherein each blade is flat.

21. The method of claim 15 wherein the transfer conduit includes a first wall having a first outer surface and a second wall having a second outer surface, and one side of the platform includes a first centering bracket and the opposite side of the platform includes a second centering bracket;

the first centering bracket being juxtaposed the first outer surface and the second centering bracket being juxtaposed the second outer surface to help center the shaft and rotor in the transfer conduit.
