Abstract

The present invention is directed to an electrical wiring device that includes at least one circuit configured to provide an output signal in response to at least one external input signal. The device further comprises a light emission and detection assembly that includes: a lamp sub-assembly coupled to the at least one circuit, the lamp subassembly including at least one light emitting element configured to emit light in response to the output signal; and an ambient light sensor sub-assembly coupled to the at least one circuit and including an ambient light sensor and a sensor housing assembly, the ambient light sensor being configured to generate the at least one external input signal in response to sensing an ambient light level in the space, the sensor housing assembly being configured to substantially isolate the ambient light sensor from the light emitted by the lamp sub-assembly.

Claims

1. An electrical wiring device comprising:

a housing including a plurality of wiring terminals configured to be connected to a source of electrical power, the housing including a front body member having a user accessible surface;

at least one circuit disposed in the housing, the at least one circuit being configured to provide an output signal in response to at least one external input signal;

a light emission and detection assembly including,

a lamp sub-assembly coupled to the at least one circuit, the lamp subassembly including at least one light emitting element configured to emit light in response to the output signal, and

an ambient light sensor sub-assembly coupled to the at least one circuit and including an ambient light sensor and a sensor housing assembly, the ambient light sensor being configured to generate the at least one external input signal in response to sensing an ambient light level in a space, the sensor housing assembly being configured to substantially isolate the ambient light sensor from the light emitted by the lamp sub-assembly.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the user accessible surface includes an opening configured to accommodate a translucent lens element, the lamp sub-assembly being configured to illuminate the space via the translucent lens element.

3. The device of claim 2, wherein the translucent lens element has a dimension of at least 0.4 inches.

4. The device of claim 2, further including a reset button and a test button disposed either side of a central latitudinal axis of the user accessible surface, the translucent lens member being adjacent to the reset button.

5. The device of claim 4, wherein the translucent lens element has a dimension of at least 0.4 inches.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the user accessible surface includes an opening configured to accommodate a sensor lens element coupled to the ambient light sensor.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the ambient light sensor sub-assembly further comprises a spacer element coupled to the ambient light sensor and configured to position the ambient light sensor within the sensor housing assembly.

The device of claim 1, the light emission and detection assembly further including a printed circuit board (PCB) electrically connected to the ambient light sensor, the ambient light sensor sub-assembly comprising a spacer element configured to position the ambient light sensor a predetermined distance from the PCB.

The device of claim 1, wherein the plurality of wiring terminals includes a plurality of line terminals and a plurality of load terminals, the at least one circuit including a protective circuit assembly responsive to at least one external fault condition, the protective circuit assembly comprising a circuit interrupter capable of electrically connecting the plurality of line terminals and the plurality of load terminals in a reset state and disconnecting the plurality of line terminals from the plurality of load terminals in a tripped state;

a reset button assembly including a reset button disposed in the user accessible surface capable of effecting the reset state when manually actuated;

a test button assembly including a test button disposed in the user accessible surface capable of effecting the tripped state when manually actuated;

a fault sensing circuit assembly configured to sense the at least one fault condition; and

a fault detection circuit coupled to the fault sensing circuit and configured to drive the circuit interrupter into the tripped state in response to detection of the at least one fault condition.

10. The device of claim 9, wherein the external fault condition includes a set of fault conditions including a ground fault, a grounded neutral fault, or an arc fault.

11. The device of claim 9, wherein the at least one light emitting element is disposed adjacent to the reset button.

The device of claim 9, wherein the at least one circuit includes an end of life detection circuit configured to generate an end of life detection signal when there is an end of life condition in the fault sensing circuit or the fault detection circuit, the output signal being disabled as a result of the end of life detection signal.

The device of claim 9, wherein the reset button assembly includes a reset button coupled to a reset arm, the reset arm including an escapement portion, the escapement portion being configured to engage a movable latch structure to establish the reset state in response to the reset button being manually actuated.

14. The device of claim 13, wherein the circuit interrupter includes a reset inhibition mechanism configured to prevent the latch from engaging the escapement portion in response to a predefined condition.

15. The device of claim 14, wherein the predefined condition includes an end of life condition in the fault sensing circuit or the fault detection circuit.

16. The device of claim 14, wherein the predefined condition substantially disables the output signal.

The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one circuit includes an ambient light sensor circuit coupled to the ambient light sensor, the ambient light sensor circuit including at least one threshold detector coupled to the ambient light sensor and configured to generate a threshold detection signal when the ambient light level falls below a predetermined threshold.

18. The device of claim 17, wherein the at least one threshold detector comprises:

a voltage divider coupled to the ambient light sensor, the voltage divider being configured to generate a control voltage that is a function of an impedance of the ambient light sensor; and

a zener diode coupled to the voltage divider and responsive to the control voltage.

19. The device of claim 17, wherein the ambient light sensor circuit is configured such that a light intensity of the emitted light is inversely related to the ambient light level.

20. The device of claim 17, wherein the at least one circuit includes a proximity detector circuit, the output signal being generated in response to a detection signal generated by the proximity detector circuit.

21. The device of claim 20, wherein the proximity detector includes an infrared light source and an infrared light detector.

22. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one circuit is coupled to a motion detector.

23. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one circuit is further configured to ignore pre-determined instantaneous variations in the ambient light level.

24. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one circuit includes a processor.

25. The device of claim 24, wherein the ambient light sensor sub-assembly includes an ambient light threshold detector, the processor being configured to poll the ambient light threshold detector at predetermined time intervals.

26. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one circuit is configured to disable the output signal from time to time, the at least one circuit being configured to respond to the external input signal when the output signal has been disabled.

27. The device of claim 26 wherein the at least one circuit includes a time multiplexing circuit.

28. The device of claim 26, wherein the user accessible surface includes an opening configured to accommodate a structure that includes at least one optically transmissive element, the ambient light sensor and the at least one light emitting element being disposed under the at least one optically transmissive element.

29. The device of claim 28, wherein the at least one optically transmissive element includes a translucent lens element.

30. The device of claim 28, wherein the translucent lens element has a dimension of at least 0.4 inches.

31. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one circuit includes a switch element or a potentiometer configured to adjust the output signal to vary the intensity of the emitted light.

32. The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one light element includes two or more light elements.

33. The device of claim 32, wherein the at least one circuit includes a control circuit configured to turn the two or more light elements ON or OFF at substantially the same time.

34. The device of claim 1, wherein the user accessible surface includes at least two openings configured to accommodate at least two corresponding lens elements, each of the at least two lens elements including a first surface joined to a second surface to form a peripheral edge of the user accessible surface.

35. The device of 34, wherein the ambient light sensor is disposed under one of the at least two lens elements.

36. An electrical wiring device comprising:

a housing including a plurality of wiring terminals configured to be connected to a source of electrical power, the housing also including a front body member having a user accessible surface, the user accessible surface including a two dimensional opening formed therein and a structure that includes at least one optically transmissive element disposed within the opening;

at least one circuit disposed in the housing, the at least one circuit being configured to provide an output signal in response to at least one external input signal;

a lamp sub-assembly coupled to the at least one circuit, the lamp subassembly including at least one light emitting element configured to emit light in response to the output signal;

an ambient light sensor sub-assembly coupled to the at least one circuit and including an ambient light sensor, the ambient light sensor being configured to generate the at least one external input signal in response to sensing an ambient light level in a space, wherein the at least one circuit is configured to disable the output signal from time to time, the at least one circuit being configured to respond to the external input signal when the output signal has been disabled.

37. The device of claim 36, wherein the ambient light sensor and the at least one light emitting element are disposed under the structure.

38. The device of claim 37, wherein the at least one optically transmissive element includes a translucent lens element.

39. The device of claim 38, wherein the translucent lens element has a dimension of at least 0.4 inches.

40. The device of claim 36, wherein at least one optically transmissive element includes a sensor lens element in optical communication with the ambient light sensor.

41. The device of claim 36, wherein the plurality of wiring terminals includes a plurality of line terminals and a plurality of load terminals, the at least one circuit further comprising a protective circuit assembly responsive to at least one external fault condition, the protective circuit assembly comprising a circuit interrupter capable of electrically connecting the plurality of line terminals and the plurality of load terminals in a reset state and disconnecting the plurality of line terminals from the plurality of load terminals in a tripped state;

a reset button assembly including a reset button disposed in the user accessible surface capable of effecting the reset state when manually actuated;

a test button assembly including a test button disposed in the user accessible surface capable of effecting the tripped state when manually actuated;

a fault sensing circuit assembly configured to sense the at least one fault condition; and

a fault detection circuit coupled to the fault sensing circuit and configured to drive the circuit interrupter into the tripped state in response to detection of the at least one fault condition.

42. The device of claim 41, wherein the external fault condition includes a set of fault conditions including a ground fault, a grounded neutral fault, or an arc fault.

43. The device of claim 41, wherein the at least one optically transmissive element is disposed adjacent to the reset button.

44. The device of claim 43, wherein the at least one optically transmissive element includes a translucent lens element.

45. The device of claim 36, wherein the ambient light sensor sub-assembly further comprises a spacer element coupled to the ambient light sensor and configured to position the ambient light sensor within the sensor housing assembly.

46. The device of claim 36, wherein the lamp sub-assembly an ambient light sensor sub-assembly include a printed circuit board (PCB) electrically connected to the ambient light sensor, the ambient light sensor sub-assembly comprising a spacer element configured to position the ambient light sensor a predetermined distance from the PCB.

47. A method for controlling an electrical wiring device, the method comprising:

providing a housing including a plurality of wiring terminals configured to be connected to a source of electrical power, the housing also including a front body member having a user accessible surface, the housing including a lamp sub-assembly having at least one light emitting element configured to emit light in response to an output signal, and an ambient light sensor configured to generate at least one external input signal in response to sensing an ambient light level in the space;

evaluating the at least one external input signal relative to a predetermined ambient light threshold during a first time interval wherein the output signal is substantially ignored or disabled; and

generating the output signal during a second time interval if the at least one external input signal indicates that the ambient light is less than the predetermined ambient light threshold, the at least one external input signal being disabled or ignored during the second time interval.

48. The method of claim 47, wherein the step of evaluating is performed by a processor.

49. The method of claim 48, wherein the processor is configured to determine an end-of-life condition, the processor being configured to provide a user-readable indicia indicating the end-of life condition.

50. The method of claim 47, further comprising the step of detecting a fault condition.

51. The method of claim 50, further comprising the step of providing an indication in response to detecting the fault condition.
