1. A method of making one or more proteins, the method comprising:
- contacting a pretreated biomass feedstock with one or more cellulolytic enzymes to produce a saccharified material, andfermenting the saccharified material utilizing a microorganism to produce one or more proteins, wherein the biomass feedstock comprises a cellulosic and/or lignocellulosic material; and
wherein the biomass feedstock has been pretreated by irradiating with electron beam radiation to a total dose of between 10 Mrad and 150 Mrad.

Abstract
Biomass (e.g., plant biomass, animal biomass, and municipal waste biomass) is processed to produce useful products, such as fuels. For example, systems are described that can use feedstock materials, such as cellulosic and/or lignocellulosic materials, to produce ethanol and/or butanol, e.g., by fermentation.
