1. A proximity sensor for detecting the presence of an object within a predetermined distance of a window of a portable electronic device, the proximity sensor comprising:

  • a light emitter arranged to emit light through the window such that at least some of emitted light reflects off of the object;

    a light detector arranged to detect light, the detector positioned with respect to the light emitter to detect at least some of the light reflected off the object; and

    a light block system configured to prevent light other than the light reflected off the object from being detected by the light detector, the light block system comprising;

    a first light block structure positioned between the light emitter and the light detector, anda second light block structure separated from the first light block structure by a gap and attached to an interior surface of the window, the second light block structure configured to prevent light reflected from the interior surface of the window and light reflected from a corresponding portion of an exterior surface of the window from being detected by the light detector.
