1. A surgical stapling instrument, comprising:
- a handle comprising an actuator;
a shaft extending from said handle;
an end effector extending from said shaft, said end effector comprising;
a proximal end attached to said shaft;
a distal end opposite said proximal end;
a longitudinal axis extending between said proximal end and said distal end;
a first jaw configured to support staples comprising staple legs; and
a second jaw comprising a retainer configured to support a matrix element opposite said staples, wherein said second jaw is movable toward said first jaw to engage said matrix element with said staple legs;
a cam operably coupled with said actuator, wherein said cam is movable along said longitudinal axis to deform said staple legs; and
a cam slot configured to guide said cam along a predetermined path, wherein said cam slot comprises dwell portions and driver portions, wherein said dwell portions are arranged within said second jaw such that said cam can contact said staple legs when said cam is in said dwell portions, and wherein said driver portions are arranged within said second jaw such that said cam deforms said staple legs when said cam is in said driver portions.

Abstract
A surgical stapling instrument can comprise, one, a handle comprising an actuator and, two, an end effector comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and a longitudinal axis extending between the proximal end and the distal end. The end effector can further comprise a first jaw configured to support staples comprising staple legs and, in addition, a second jaw supporting a matrix element opposite the staples, wherein one of the jaws is movable toward the other in order to engage the matrix element with the staple legs. The stapling instrument can further comprise a cam operably coupled with the actuator, wherein the cam is movable along the longitudinal axis to deform the staple legs.

a handle comprising an actuator; a shaft extending from said handle; an end effector extending from said shaft, said end effector comprising; a proximal end attached to said shaft; a distal end opposite said proximal end; a longitudinal axis extending between said proximal end and said distal end; a first jaw configured to support staples comprising staple legs; and a second jaw comprising a retainer configured to support a matrix element opposite said staples, wherein said second jaw is movable toward said first jaw to engage said matrix element with said staple legs; a cam operably coupled with said actuator, wherein said cam is movable along said longitudinal axis to deform said staple legs; and a cam actuator configured to move said cam toward and away from said first jaw when said cam is moved in a longitudinal direction along said longitudinal axis, wherein said cam actuator is configured to move said cam between at least one drive position and at least one dwell position, and wherein said cam is positioned to deform said staple legs of said staples when said cam is in said at least one drive position.
