Abstract

This relates to treating reversible chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and more particularly, to exchanging energy with airway tissue such as that found in human lungs. This exchange of energy reduces the ability of the airways to constrict, reduces the resistance within the airway to the flow of air through the airway, reduces mucus plugging of the airways, and/or increases the airway diameter. This energy exchange also may reduce the ability of the lung to produce at least one of the symptoms of reversible obstructive pulmonary disease.

Claims

1. A device for delivering energy to tissue, the device comprising:

a flexible elongate body having a proximal end and a distal end;

an expandable electrode assembly disposed adjacent to the distal end of the elongate body, the electrode assembly including a plurality of electrically-conductive electrodes;

an electrically-conductive member extending from the proximal end of the elongate body to the expandable electrode assembly, for supplying energy to the electrodes; and

a thermocouple attached to at least one of the plurality of electrodes so that the at least one of the plurality of electrodes and the thermocouple form a thermocouple junction for obtaining a measurement of a temperature of tissue contacting the one of the plurality of electrodes, wherein the thermocouple includes two leads disposed along an outer surface of the at least one electrode, wherein each of the two leads is attached to the at least one of the plurality of electrodes in a spaced relationship.

The device of claim 1, wherein the at least one of the plurality of electrodes includes a proximal portion covered with an insulating material, a distal portion covered with an insulating material, and a middle portion between the proximal and distal portions and not covered by an insulating material, and wherein the two leads are attached to the middle portion.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the plurality of electrodes are bipolar electrodes.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein, when one of the two leads detaches from the at least one of the plurality of electrodes, the thermocouple stops measuring temperature.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the expandable electrode assembly is a basket, and wherein the plurality of electrodes are spaced radially about a longitudinal axis of the device.

The device of claim 1, further including an actuating member extending from a proximal end of the device toward the distal end, wherein longitudinal movement of the actuating member is configured to reciprocally move the expandable electrode assembly between a collapsed configuration and an expanded configuration.

7. A device for delivering energy to tissue, the device comprising:

a flexible elongate body having a proximal end and a distal end;

an expandable electrode assembly disposed adjacent to the distal end of the flexible elongate body, the electrode assembly including at least one electrically-conductive electrode; and

a thermocouple in communication with the at least one electrode so that the at least one electrode and the thermocouple form a thermocouple junction for obtaining a measurement of a temperature of tissue contacting the at least one electrode, wherein the thermocouple includes two leads disposed along an outer surface of the at least one electrode, wherein each of the two leads is attached to the at least one electrode in a spaced relationship.

The device of claim 7, wherein the at least one electrode includes a proximal portion covered with an insulating material, a distal portion covered with an insulating material, and a middle portion between the proximal and distal portions and not covered by an insulating material, and wherein the two leads are attached to the middle portion.

9. The device of claim 7, wherein the expandable electrode assembly is a basket, and wherein the basket includes a plurality of electrodes that are spaced radially about a longitudinal axis of the device.

The device of claim 7, further including an actuating member extending from a proximal end of the device toward the distal end, wherein longitudinal movement of the actuating member is configured to reciprocally move the expandable electrode assembly between a collapsed configuration and an expanded configuration.

11. The device of claim 7, further including a lumen in the flexible elongate body, and an energizing member disposed through the lumen, wherein the energizing member is configured to deliver current to the at least one electrode.

12. The device of claim 7, wherein the at least one electrode is a radiofrequency electrode.

13. The device of claim 7, wherein the at least one electrode is configured to deliver energy in a monopolar manner.

14. The device of claim 7, wherein the at least one electrode is one of a plurality of electrodes configured to deliver energy in a bipolar manner.

15. The device of claim 7, wherein the at least one electrode has a length that extends along a longitudinal axis of the device.

16. A device for delivering energy to tissue, the device comprising:

a flexible elongate body having a proximal end and a distal end;

an expandable electrode assembly disposed adjacent to the distal end of the flexible elongate body, the electrode assembly including at least one electrically-conductive electrode; and

a thermocouple in communication with the at least one electrode so that the at least one electrode and the thermocouple form a thermocouple junction for obtaining a measurement of a temperature of tissue contacting the at least one electrode, wherein the thermocouple includes two leads disposed along an outer surface of the at least one electrode, each of the two leads is attached to the at least one electrode in a spaced relationship, and when one of the two leads detaches from the electrode, the thermocouple stops measuring temperature.

17. The device of claim 16, wherein the expandable electrode assembly is a basket, and wherein the basket includes a plurality of electrodes that are spaced radially about a longitudinal axis of the device.

18. The device of claim 16, further including an actuating member extending from a proximal end of the device toward the distal end, wherein longitudinal movement of the actuating member is configured to reciprocally move the expandable electrode assembly between a collapsed configuration and an expanded configuration.
