1. A method for detecting a fluidics malfunction of an analyte sensor system in a circulatory system of a host, the method comprising:

  • providing an apparatus comprising an external surface, a first orifice and a second orifice, wherein at least one of the first orifice and the second orifice is configured to couple with a fluid flow device;

    a lumen, at least one sensor disposed within the lumen of the apparatus;

    contacting the at least one sensor with a plurality of samples from the circulatory system of a host; and

    generating a signal from each of the at least one sensors for the plurality of samples;

    detecting a fluidics malfunction by monitoring a pattern of signal increases or decreases generated from each of the at least one sensor from the plurality of samples; and

    causing the analyte sensor system to activate a fail-safe mode upon detecting the fluidics malfunction, wherein the fail safe mode consists essentially of providing a visual and/or audio alert, an alarm, and/or an instruction to the host or a caretaker of the host, suspending temporarily or permanently a display of analyte sensor system data, updating calibration or re-calibrating the sensor, requesting external reference values, transmitting one or more messages to a user interface or other external source, or shutting down of the analyte sensor system.
