Banking machine controlled responsive to data read from data bearing records
First Claim
1. A tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium with instructions encoded thereon for execution by a processor and when executed operable to:
- obtain data representative of a card position from a sensor located adjacent to a card entry slot;
wherein the card entry slot is a size that allows at least part of a card to enter a card reader module coupled with the card entry slot;
wherein the card reader module includes a gate located adjacent the card entry slot;
wherein the gate is movable to an open position and a closed position;
wherein when the gate is in the closed position, the gate closes an opening;
wherein when the gate is in the closed position, a card is unable to enter through the opening;
wherein when the gate is in the open position, a card is able to enter through the opening;
wherein the card reader module includes a drive in operative connection with the gate;
wherein the drive is operable to cause the gate to move between the open position and the closed position;
wherein based on signals received from the sensor, the instructions are operable to cause the processor to determine from a card that is adjacent to the gate while the gate is in the closed position whether a leading edge of the card is a long edge of the card, whether a magnetic stripe on the card is positioned adjacent the leading edge, and whether the magnetic stripe is positioned on a correct side of the card; and
wherein the instructions are operable, responsive at least in part to a positive determination that the leading edge of the card is the long edge of the card, the magnetic stripe is positioned adjacent the leading edge, and the magnetic stripe is positioned on a correct side of the card, to cause the drive to cause the gate to move from the closed position to the open position.

Abstract
A banking system operates responsive to data read from data bearing records. The system includes an automated banking machine comprising a card reader. The card reader includes a movable read head that can read card data along a magnetic stripe of a card that was inserted long-edge first. The card reader includes a card entry gate. The gate is opened for a card that is determined to be properly oriented for data reading. The card reader can encrypt card data, including account data. The card data is usable by the machine to authorize a user to carry out a financial transfer involving the account.

12. A tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium with instructions encoded thereon for execution by a processor and when executed operable to:
-
receiving signals from a sensor indicating that a card is positioned adjacent to the gate which has a leading edge and magnetic properties; wherein in a closed position, the gate prevents card entry into the card reader module; wherein in an open position, the gate allows card entry into the card reader module; cause opening of a card access gate that controls card entry into a card reader module responsive at least in part to the signals from the sensor indicating that the card is positioned adjacent to the gate, the leading edge corresponds to a long edge of the card, and wherein the magnetic properties are both adjacent to the leading edge, and on an expected side of the card. - View Dependent Claims (13, 14, 15, 16, 17)

18. A tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium with instructions encoded thereon for execution by a processor and when executed operable to:
-
receive signals from a card sensor that includes a magnetic property sensor positioned adjacent to a card input opening that is blockable by an access gate which is movable to an opening unblocking position; determine that a correctly oriented magnetic stripe card is present, based at least in part on signals received from the card sensor indicating that the magnetic stripe;
is facing in a correct direction, and is located nearest to a long card edge of the card which is the leading card edge of the card relative to the card input opening; andmove the access gate to an opening, unblocking position responsive at least in part to determining that a correctly oriented magnetic stripe card is present. - View Dependent Claims (19)
