1. A tissue sample holding system for collecting tissue samples obtained using a biopsy device, wherein the biopsy device has a cutter defining a cutter lumen along an axis, wherein the tissue sample holding system comprises:

  • (a) a rotatable tissue sample holder, wherein the tissue sample holder comprises(i) a plurality of discrete tissue sample chambers, wherein each of the tissue sample chambers is configured to receive at least one tissue sample communicated through the cutter lumen, and(ii) a rotatable manifold in fluid communication with the cutter lumen, wherein the rotatable manifold comprises a plurality of longitudinal passages, a plurality of radial passages, and a plurality of compartments, wherein the longitudinal passages are in fluid communication with the plurality of radial passages, wherein each of the plurality of radial passages is in fluid communication with a corresponding compartment of the plurality of compartments, wherein each of the compartments is in fluid communication with a corresponding tissue sample chamber of the plurality of tissue sample chambers;

    (b) a tissue sample holder position sensing system operable to sense the rotational position of the rotatable tissue sample holder; and

    (c) a controller in communication with the tissue sample holder and the tissue sample holder position sensing system, wherein the controller is operable to rotate the tissue sample holder based at least in part on the position of the rotatable tissue sample holder as sensed by the tissue sample holder position sensing system by successively indexing the tissue sample chambers relative to the cutter lumen.
