1. A method of wireless communication, comprising:

  • receiving, by an access point, resource utilization messages sent by a first access terminal associated with the access point and sent by second access terminals not associated with the access point, each of the resource utilization messages having a priority and specifying one or more resources that are desired by a respective access terminal for reception of traffic;

    identifying one or more resources that are specified by the first access terminal;

    comparing priorities of the received resource utilization messages;

    making a determination, by the access point, whether the first access terminal has won contention for one or more of the identified one or more resources based on the priorities; and

    scheduling, by the access point, traffic destined for the first access terminal based on a result of the determination, wherein the traffic is scheduled on one or more resources that were not identified by the first access terminal if the first access terminal has not won the contention for the one or more of the identified one or more resources.
