Abstract

Disclosed is a feature for a vehicle that enables taking precautionary actions in response to conditions on the road network around or ahead of the vehicle, in particular, a blind intersection along a section of road. A database that represents the road network is used to determine locations where a blind intersection is located along a section of road. Then, precautionary action data is added to the database to indicate a location at which a precautionary action is to be taken about the blind intersection located along the section of road. A precautionary action system installed in a vehicle uses this database, or a database derived therefrom, in combination with a positioning system to determine when the vehicle is at a location that corresponds to the location of a precautionary action. When the vehicle is at such a location, a precautionary action is taken by a vehicle system as the vehicle is approaching a blind intersection.

Claims

1. A computer implemented method for making an augmented version of a database that can be used as a component in a vehicle system, the method comprising:

using, by a computer processor, data contained in a first version of a database to identify at least one geographic feature satisfying a first condition at a first location and determine, if the identified at least one geographic feature satisfies the first condition at the first location, whether at least one geographic feature in a vicinity of the first location satisfies a second condition; and

forming, by the computer processor, the augmented version of the database by adding precautionary action data to the first version of the database in association with each of the identified at least one geographic feature when at least one of geographic features in the vicinity thereof satisfies the second condition, the precautionary action data operative to enable a precautionary action to be taken by the vehicle system.

The computer implemented method of claim 1 wherein the at least one geographic feature comprises a road segment leading to an intersection, the first condition comprises that the intersection would be visible to a driver at the first location along the road segment assuming no obstructions there between, and the second condition comprises that a geographic feature in the vicinity thereof obstructs the driver'"'"'s view of the intersection from the first location, and further wherein:

the using further comprises selecting by the computer processor, from the first version of a database a data record that represents a road segment leading to an intersection and determining whether the intersection would be visible to a driver located at a first location along the road segment assuming no obstructions there between and, if so, determining whether one or more geographic features in the vicinity thereof obstructs a driver'"'"'s view of the intersection from the first location; and

upon determining that the road segment includes an obstruction to a driver'"'"'s view of the intersection, adding by the computer processor, the precautionary action data to the first version of the database in association therewith.

3. The computer implemented method of claim 2 further wherein the road segment is determined to have an obstruction to a driver'"'"'s view of an intersection by evaluating shape point data associated with the road segment.

4. The computer implemented method of claim 2 further comprising:

continuing by the computer processor, to select from the first version of the database data records that represent road segments to identify all locations of blind intersections throughout the geographic region.

5. The computer implemented method of claim 2 further comprising:

continuing by the computer processor, to select from the first version of the database data records that represent road segments until all data records that represent road segments have been selected.

6. The computer implemented method of claim 1 further comprising:

compiling by the computer processor, the augmented version of the database into a format suitable for use in a navigation system.

7. The computer implemented method of claim 1 wherein the determining further comprises evaluating at least two items of data contained in the first version of the database to determine whether any of the identified geographic features satisfied the second condition.

8. A database stored on a non-transitory computer-readable medium, wherein the database includes data that represents a road network in a geographic region, wherein the database comprises:

data records that represent road segments that make up the road network;

data records that represent one or more intersections of roads in the road network;

data that represent geographic features along one or more roads leading to the one or more intersections; and

data that indicates one or more precautionary action locations, wherein each of the one or more precautionary action locations is associated with a geographic feature satisfying a first condition at a first location with at least one geographic feature in the vicinity thereof satisfying a second condition, the precautionary action data operative to enable a precautionary action to be taken by a vehicle system.

9. The database of claim 8 wherein the data that indicates one or more precautionary action locations further includes data that indicates a location along a road segment at which a precautionary action is to be taken by a vehicle system.

10. The database of claim 8 wherein the data that indicates one or more precautionary action locations further includes data that indicates a direction along a road segment at which a precautionary action is to be taken.

11. The database of claim 8 wherein the data that indicates one or more precautionary action locations further includes data that refers to the location of the intersection for which the view is obstructed.

12. The database of claim 8 further comprising data that indicates permitted directions of travel along road segments, speed limits along road segments, classifications of road segments, and locations of road segments.

13. The database of claim 8 further comprising data that identifies successor road segments of each road segment, wherein successor road segments are those road segments that connect to a road segment at each end thereof.

14. The database of claim 8 wherein the at least one geographic feature comprises a road segment leading to an intersection, the first condition comprises that the intersection would be visible to a driver of a vehicle at the first location along the road segment assuming no obstructions there between, and the second condition comprises that a geographic feature in the vicinity thereof obstructs the driver'"'"'s view of the intersection from the first location.

15. A vehicle system comprising:

a database that contains data representing a geographic region in which a vehicle is being operated, wherein the data includes data that represents a road network located in the geographic region and precautionary action data associated with a geographic feature satisfying a first condition at a first location with at least one geographic feature in the vicinity thereof satisfying a second condition;

a positioning system that determines a current location of the vehicle relative to the data representing a geographic region; and

a precautionary action application responsive to the positioning system and the database that provides a precautionary action when the positioning system determines that the current location of the vehicle is approaching a location associated with precautionary action data.

16. The system of claim 15 wherein the precautionary action data further includes data that indicates a location along a road segment at which a precautionary action is to be taken by a vehicle system.

17. The system of claim 15 wherein the precautionary action data further includes data that indicates a direction along a road segment at which a precautionary action is to be taken.

18. The system of claim 15 wherein the precautionary action data further includes data that refers to the location of the intersection along the road for which the driver'"'"'s view is obstructed by the geographic feature.

19. The system of claim 15 wherein the at least one geographic feature comprises a road segment leading to an intersection, the first condition comprises that the intersection would be visible to a driver of a vehicle at the first location along the road segment assuming no obstructions there between, and the second condition comprises that a geographic feature in the vicinity thereof obstructs the driver'"'"'s view of the intersection from the first location.

20. A computer implemented method for providing precautionary actions in a vehicle comprising:

determining by a computer processor, a current position of the vehicle;

accessing by the computer processor, a database that represents a road network to obtain data representations of a part of the road network around of the current position of the vehicle; and

upon determining by the computer processor, that the data representations of the part of the road network around the current position of the vehicle include precautionary action data indicative of a geographic feature satisfying a first condition at a location with at least one geographic feature in the vicinity thereof satisfying a second condition, taking a precautionary action as the vehicle is approaching the location.

21. The computer implemented method of claim 20 further comprising:

building by the computer processor, an electronic horizon after accessing the database; and

using by the computer processor, the electronic horizon to determine whether precautionary action data is included therein.

22. The computer implemented method of claim 20 wherein the precautionary action is provided via a user interface of the vehicle.

23. The computer implemented method of claim 20 wherein the at least one geographic feature comprises a road segment leading to an intersection, the first condition comprises that the intersection would be visible to a driver of a vehicle at the location along the road segment assuming no obstructions there between, and the second condition comprises that a geographic feature in the vicinity thereof obstructs the driver'"'"'s view of the intersection from the location.
