1. A medical device comprising:

  • an implant having a proximal end, a distal end, and a self-expanding portion with a constrained diameter d and a constrained length l, each of the proximal and distal ends including a plurality of terminal retaining segments portion extending therefrom; and

    an implant delivery system including a catheter defining proximal and distal ends, the catheter having an outer sheath slidably disposed about an inner member, the outer sheath at least partially covering the implant and being retractable relative to the inner member to expose the implant;

    a mechanism for enabling increases in the constrained length l of the implant when the outer sheath is retracted relative to the inner member, the mechanism including;

    a distal interlock structure attached to the inner member for preventing axial movement of the distal end of the implant relative to the inner member when the outer sheath is retracted relative to the inner member, the distal interlock structure including a first retainer defining a plurality of first cavities configured and dimensioned to receive, and interlock with, respective terminal retaining segments of the distal end of the implant; and

    a proximal interlock structure attached to the inner member for accommodating increases in the length l of the implant when the outer sheath is retracted relative to the inner member, the proximal interlock structure including a second retainer defining a plurality of second cavities configured and dimensioned to retain respective terminal retaining segments of the proximal end of the implant.
