1. A mode locked fiber laser system arranged to have an output having a lasing bandwidth and having a linear cavity, said cavity comprising:

  • a fiber gain medium,a saturable absorber having a saturation fluence, anda substantially uniform Bragg grating filter having a spectral response and a bandwidth of less than 3 nm, andwherein said mode locked fiber laser system is arranged so that substantial CW mode locked operation is obtainable when less than 3 times the saturation fluence is impinging on the saturable absorber, andthe spectral response of the filter is arranged to dampen a spectral broadening relative to the lasing bandwidth;

    said system further comprises an output coupler arranged between said substantially uniform Bragg grating filter and said saturable absorber.
