Abstract

A method and apparatus for detecting RF field strength. A field strength reference generator develops a field strength reference current as a function of a field strength of a received RF signal; and a field strength quantizer develops a digital field-strength value indicative of the field strength reference current. In one embodiment, detected field strength is used to dynamically vary the impedance of a tank circuit whereby, over time, induced current is maximized. In another embodiment, using the quantized field strength to sense changes to the environment to which the RFID tag is exposed.

Claims

1. A sensing system for use in an RFID application, the sensing system comprising:

an RFID tag comprising;

a tank circuit having a selectively variable impedance;

a tuning circuit adapted to dynamically vary the impedance of the tank circuit, and to develop a first quantized value representative of the impedance of said tank circuit; and

a detector circuit adapted to develop a second quantized value as a function of a field strength of a received RF signal; and

an RFID reader adapted selectively to retrieve the first and second values.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the RFID reader is adapted to use the retrieved values to sense changes to an environment to which the RFID tag is exposed.

3. A sensing system for use in an RFID application, the sensing system comprising:

an RFID tag comprising;

a tank circuit having a selectively variable impedance; and

a tuning circuit adapted to dynamically vary the impedance of the tank circuit, and to develop a first quantized value representative of the impedance of the tank circuit; and

an RFID reader adapted selectively to retrieve the first value, and to use the retrieved first value to sense changes to an environment to which the RFID tag is exposed.

4. The sensing system of claim 3 further comprising:

the RFID tag further comprising;

a detector circuit adapted to develop a second quantized value as a function of a field strength of a received RF signal; and

the RFID reader being further adapted selectively to retrieve the first and second values, and to use the retrieved values to sense changes to an environment to which the RFID tag is exposed.

5. A sensing system for use in an RFID system, the sensing system comprising:

an RFID tag comprising;

a detector circuit adapted to develop a first quantized value as a function of a field strength of a received RF signal; and

an RFID reader adapted selectively to retrieve the first value, and to use the retrieved value to sense changes to an environment to which the RFID tag is exposed.

6. The sensing system of claim 5 further comprising:

an RFID tag further comprising;

a tank circuit having a selectively variable impedance; and

a tuning circuit adapted to dynamically vary the impedance of the tank circuit, and to develop a second quantized value representative of the impedance of the tank circuit; and

the RFID reader being further adapted selectively to retrieve the first and second values, and to use the retrieved values to sense changes to an environment to which the RFID tag is exposed.

7. A sensing system for use in an RFID application, the sensing system comprising:

an RFID tag comprising;

a tank circuit having a selectively variable impedance;

a tuning circuit adapted to dynamically vary the impedance of the tank circuit, and to develop a first quantized value representative of the impedance of said tank circuit; and

a detector circuit adapted to develop a second quantized value as a function of a field strength of a received RF signal; and

an RFID reader adapted selectively to retrieve the first and second values, and to use the retrieved values to sense changes to an environment to which the RFID tag is exposed.
