Abstract

A low cost method and system for treating water, which will be used in an industrial process, is provided. A system of the invention generally includes at least one containing means, at least one coordination means, at least one chemical application means, at least one mobile suction means, and at least one filtration means. The coordination means can control the necessary processes depending on the system needs (e.g., water quality or purity). The method and system of the invention purifies the water and eliminates suspended solids without the need of filtering the totality of the water volume, but only filtering a small fraction of up to 200 times less than the flow filtered by a conventional water treatment filtration system.

Claims

1. A system for treating water at low cost for use in an industrial process, the system comprising:

a container for storing the water, the container having a volume of at least 15,000 m³ and comprising a bottom for receiving settled particles, the bottom comprising a membrane or plastic liner capable of being cleaned by a mobile suction means;

at least one feeding line of water to the container;

a coordination means for maintaining the water in the container within water quality parameter limits specified by the coordination means;

at least one chemical application means for applying or dispersing an oxidizing agent, disinfecting agent, coagulant, or flocculant to the water in the container;

at least one mobile suction means for moving along the bottom of the container and suctioning a portion of the water from the bottom of the container containing settled particles;

a propelling means for moving the mobile suction means along the bottom of the container, the propelling means operatively coupled to the mobile suction means;

a filtration means for filtering the portion of water containing settled particles suctioned by the mobile suction means;

a collecting line coupled between the mobile suction means and the filtration means;

a return line from the filtration means to the container; and

a water outlet line configured to supply treated water from the container to a downstream industrial process;

wherein the coordination means controls activation of the chemical applications means, mobile suction means, and filtration means based on information regarding controlled parameters received by the coordination means to adjust the parameters within predetermined limits; and

controls flow of treated water to the downstream industrial process based on information regarding the downstream industrial process received by the coordination means.

2. The system according to claim 1, wherein the bottom of the container is covered with a membrane, geomembrane, geo-textile membrane, plastic liner, or a combination thereof.

3. The system according to claim 1, wherein the chemical application means comprises injectors, sprinklers, manual application, dispensers by weight, pipes, or a combination thereof.

4. The system according to claim 1, wherein the propelling means drives comprises a rail system, a cable system, a manually propelled system, a robotic system, a system guided from a distance, a boat with an engine, a floating device with an engine, or a combination thereof.

5. The system according to claim 1, wherein the filtration means comprises cartridge filters, sand filters, micro-filters, ultra-filters, nano-filters, or a combination thereof.

6. The system according to claim 1, wherein the collecting line comprises a flexible hose, rigid hose, pipe, or a combination thereof.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein one or more chemical application means is positioned about a periphery of the container.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein the chemical application means comprises injectors positioned about a periphery of the container for applying or dispensing chemicals into water in the container.

The system of claim 1, wherein the coordination means controls activation of the chemical application means based on the received information regarding controlled parameters to periodically apply disinfecting agents to the water in the container during 7-day intervals to establish an oxidation reduction potential (ORP) of at least 500 mV for a total treatment time during each 7-day interval that is dependent on the temperature of the water being treated, wherein:

i. for water having a temperature up to and including 35°

C., the total treatment time comprises a minimum period of 1 hour for each °

C. of the cooling water temperature;

ii. for water having a temperature greater than 35°

C. and less than 70°

C., the total treatment time comprises a minimum period of hours calculated by the following equation;

or

iii. for water having a temperature of 70°

C. or more, said total treatment time comprises a minimum period of 1 hour.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the coordination means controls activation of the chemical application means based on the received information regarding controlled parameters to apply an oxidizing agent to the water in the container to prevent iron and manganese concentrations of the water from exceeding 1.0 ppm.

The system of claim 1, wherein the coordination means controls activation of the chemical application means based on the received information regarding controlled parameters to apply a coagulant and/or flocculant to the water in the container to prevent the turbidity of the water from exceeding 5 NTU.

12. The system of claim 1, wherein the coordination means controls activation of the mobile suction means based on the received information regarding controlled parameters to prevent a thickness of settled material at the bottom of the container from exceeding an average of 100 mm.

13. The system of claim 1, wherein the system is a closed circuit.

14. The system of claim 1, wherein the disinfectant agent comprises ozone, a biguanide compound, a bromine-based compound, a halogen-based compound, or a combination thereof.

15. The system of claim 1, wherein the oxidizing agent comprises a halogen-based compound, a permanganate salt, a peroxide, ozone, sodium persulfate, potassium persulfate, an oxidant produced by an electrolytic method, or a combination thereof.

The system of claim 1, wherein the coagulant or flocculant comprises a cationic polymer, an anionic polymer, an aluminum salt, aluminum chlorhydrate, alum, aluminum sulfate, a quat and/or polyquat, calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide, ferrous sulphate, ferric chloride, a polyacrylamide, sodium aluminate, sodium silicate, chitosan, gelatin, guar gum, an alginate, moringa seeds, a starch derivative, or a combination thereof.

17. The system of claim 1, wherein system is a continuous water treatment system.

18. The system of claim 1, wherein the industrial process comprises a reverse osmosis process, desalination process, evaporation process, purification process, algae cultivation process, aquaculture process, mining process, or combination thereof.

19. The system of claim 1, wherein the information received by the coordination means is information from a visual inspection, empirical method, algorithm, or detector.
