1. A method for communicating between a computing device and a handheld medical device via an intermediary management device, comprising:

  • receiving, by the intermediary management device, an enable pass-thru command from the computing device, where the computing device communicates over a first bidirectional communication link with the intermediary management device and the enable pass-thru command is defined as a private extension of IEEE standard 11073-20601;

    establishing, by the intermediary management device, a pass-thru communication path from the computing device to the handheld medical device, where the pass-thru communication path is established in response to the enable pass-thru command;

    receiving, by the intermediary management device, a data packet via the first bidirectional communication link from the computing device, where the data packet has a first packet structure and is received subsequent to the enable pass-thru command;

    converting, by the intermediary management device, the data packet from the first packet structure to a second packet structure; and

    transmitting, by the intermediary management device, the converted data packet over a second bidirectional communication link to the handheld medical device.
