Abstract

An electronic scoring system for use in a variety of martial arts (including traditional styles of martial arts, mixed martial arts, weapons based martial arts, mixed weapons based martial arts or the fighting arts generally). The scoring system allows an objective determination of the force, location and effectiveness of forces applied during competition, without the need for electric weaponry.

Claims

1. An electronic scoring system for use in various styles of martial arts, comprising:

(a) armor to provide impact protection,

wherein the armor comprises;

i. an impact-protection material including one of steel;

carbon fibre;

polymer or other ballistic material;

or a multi-function electro-active material wherein the armor protects a competitor from injury by absorbing impact forces and preventing penetration or deformation by weaponry; and

ii. a force sensor embedded in the armor, wherein the force sensor detects force parameter data from one or more contact forces applied to the armor regardless of an origin of the force, wherein said force parameter data includes data regarding;

i. magnitude,

ii. location;

iii. duration; and

iv. direction

of one or more forces applied to the armor;

(b) a position-sensing means that detects position data within a fighting arena, wherein the position data relates to two or more of;

i. tracking a relative position of the competitor and one or more other competitors within a fighting arena;

ii. tracking movement of a weapon or part thereof associated with any of the competitors;

iii. dynamically monitoring and recording relative positioning of teams and the competitor and the one or more other competitors in real-time; and

(c) a scoring machine having;

i. communication means for receiving the force parameter data from the force sensor;

ii. communication means for receiving the position data from the position-sensing means;

iii. tallying means for calculating results using the;

A. the force parameter data; and

B. the position data;

iv. report generating means for generating one or more reports,

wherein the scoring machine is capable of generating output for display on a visual display.

2. An electronic scoring system according to claim 1 wherein the force sensors include one or more of the following:

one or more piezoelectric sensors, one or more piezoresistive sensors, one or more accelerometers, one or more tactile sensors, one or more pressure sensors, one or more force conducting polymers, one or more force sensing materials, and one or more shape memory alloy (SMA) sensors.

3. An electronic scoring system according to claim 1 wherein the position-sensing means includes one or more of the following:

(a) motion sensors;

(b) location tracking technologies;

(c) position sensors, including location-based, local or global positioning systems.

4. An electronic scoring system according to claim 1 wherein the position data include one or more of the following:

(a) motion capture data;

(b) location tracking data;

(c) positioning data, including one or more of location-based, local, or global positioning data.

5. An electronic scoring system according to claim 1, wherein the armor further includes one or more motion-sensors that detect movement data regarding movement of one or more of the following:

a) a competitor;

b) any object associated with the competitor, including one or more of;

i. a sensor;

ii. a marker;

iii. a force-applying member,

wherein the motion-sensor communicates the movement data to the scoring machine such that the system is capable of detecting movement related to competition.

6. An electronic scoring system according to claim 5 wherein the movement data includes data relating to one or more of the following:

a) speed;

b) magnitude;

c) direction;

d) path

of movement.

7. An electronic scoring system according to claim 5 the motion-sensors including one or more of the following:

(a) light-based motion sensor;

(b) heat-sensing sensor;

(c) one or more accelerometers;

(d) motion capture means.

8. An electronic scoring system according to claim 5 wherein the force sensors for detecting force parameter data are integrated with one or more of the following:

(a) position-sensing means;

(b) motion-sensors.

9. An electronic scoring system according to claim 1 wherein the force sensors are integrated with the armor such that the armor acts as a sensor for detecting force parameter data.

10. An electronic scoring system according to claim 1, wherein the scoring machine is configured to calculate one or more results in the form of a damage value, the damage value being converted into a scoring advantage or disadvantage, wherein the results are based on one or more of:

(a) force parameter data;

(b) movement data;

(c) position data.

11. An electronic scoring system according to claim 10, wherein the scoring machine is further enabled to calibrate damage value according to a physical attribute of:

(a) an individual competitor; and

(b) a force-applying member, including one or more of;

i. an object used to apply the force;

ii. a contact surface used to apply the force,

such that the scoring machine is enabled to interpret a result of a contact force as if the force had been applied by a force-applying member that is different than the force-applying member actually used to apply the force.

12. An electronic scoring system according to claim 10, wherein the damage value is represented on the visual display by a visual rendering of a force applied to an area on a competitor'"'"'s body, the visual rendering showing a relative distribution of forces across the area.

An electronic scoring system according to claim 1, wherein the armor is divided into segments, each segment of the armor corresponding to different grid co-ordinates on a scoring grid, such that the scoring machine is enabled to record a specific location of a force applied to the armor by reference to the corresponding grid co-ordinates.

An electronic scoring system according to claim 1, further including a response simulation means coupled to the armor, the response simulation means being activated when the force sensor detects a force of a particular threshold damage value, the damage value being calculated based on one or more of the following:

(a) force parameter data including a combination of two or more of the following;

i. magnitude;

ii. location;

iii. duration; and

iv. direction

of one or more forces applied to the armor;

(b) movement data; and

(c) position data

wherein the response simulation means simulates at least part of the effect on a competitor of being struck by a force of the calculated damage value.

15. An electronic scoring system according to claim 14 wherein the response simulation means is a light-emitting means.

16. An electronic scoring system according to claim 15, wherein the light emitter is coupled to a helmet-portion of the armor, the light emitter being activated to flash when the force sensor associated with the helmet-portion of the armor detects a force of a particular threshold damage value, thereby creating a simulation of a reaction from a competitor wearing the helmet-portion, the simulation being the light emitter flashing in the competitor'"'"'s eyes.

17. An electronic scoring system according to claim 15 wherein the electric response simulation means is configured to trigger when a force of a particular threshold damage value is applied to the armor thereby creating a simulation of a reaction from a competitor wearing the armor.

18. An electronic scoring system according to claim 1, wherein the system further comprises a computer generated imagery (CGI) means for rendering one or more visual representations of competition, said visual representations being based on one or more of:

(a) force parameter data;

(b) movement data;

(c) position data.

19. An electronic scoring system according to claim 18 wherein said visual representation includes a visual simulation of a damage value of one or more forces applied.

20. An electronic scoring system according to claim 19, wherein said visual simulation includes an anatomical representation of a competitor'"'"'s body and a theoretical effect of the force applied, said effect including one or more of the following:

(a) displacement of a body part in a direction of the force applied;

(b) an impression of the body part at the location of the force applied as a function of an object used to apply the force;

(c) relative distribution of forces across the body part at the location of the force applied;

(d) simulated damage to the body part at the location of the force applied as if the body part was unprotected; and

(e) reaction by the competitor to damage.

21. An electronic scoring system according to claim 1, wherein the force sensor comprises a plurality of sensors connected in one or more arrays, each array being connected to the communication means, thereby forming a module that is in communication with the scoring machine.

22. An electronic scoring system according to claim 1, wherein the armor includes built-in electronic circuitry for driving at least one component of the armor that requires power.

23. An electronic scoring system according to claim 1, further including a camera for recording one or more visual perspectives of competition, wherein said one or more visual perspectives is sent to the scoring machine visual display.

24. An electronic scoring method for use in various styles of martial arts including the steps of:

(a) detecting, using one or more force sensors, force parameter data from one or more forces applied to an armor that is configured to be worn by a user, wherein the armor comprises an impact-protection material including one of;

steel;

carbon fibre;

polymer or other ballistic material;

or a multi-function electro-active material wherein the armor protects a competitor from injury by absorbing impact forces and preventing penetration or deformation by weaponry;

(b) detecting, using a position sensing means, position data within a fighting arena wherein, the position data relates to two or more of;

tracking a relative position of the competitor and one or more other competitors within a fighting arena;

ii. racking movement of a weapon or part thereof associated with any the competitors;

iii. dynamically monitoring and recording relative positioning of teams and of the competitor and the one or more other competitors in real-time;

(b) communicating, using a communications means, the force parameter data and the position data to a scoring machine; and

(c) calculating, using the scoring machine, a result using the;

i. the force parameter data,

ii. the position data;

wherein the force parameter data includes data regarding;

i. magnitude;

ii. location;

iii. duration; and

iv. direction

of one or more forces applied to the armor, regardless of an origin of the force.

25. An electronic scoring method according to claim 24 wherein the force parameter data is detected by the one or more force sensors.

26. An electronic scoring method according to claim 25, wherein the force sensors include one or more of the following:

one or more piezoelectric sensors, one or more piezoresistive sensors, one or more accelerometers, one or more tactile sensors, one or more pressure sensors, one or more force conducting polymers, one or more force sensing materials, and one or more shape memory alloy (SMA) sensors.

27. An electronic scoring method according to claim 26 including a further step of detecting movement data regarding one or more of:

(a) a competitor;

(b) any object associated with the competitor, including one or more of;

i. a sensor;

ii. a marker;

iii. a force-applying member.

28. An electronic scoring method according to claim 27 including a further step of calculating a result expressed as a damage value, the result being based on one or more of:

(a) force parameter data;

(b) movement data;

(c) position data.

29. An electronic scoring method according to claim 28, including a further step of rendering one or more visual representations of competition using computer generated imagery (CGI), the visual representations being based on one or more of:

(a) force parameter data;

(b) movement data;

(c) position data.
