Abstract

A system, method, and apparatus are disclosed for dressing a wound. The apparatus comprises a liquid and gas permeable transmission layer, an absorbent layer for absorbing wound exudate, the absorbent layer overlying the transmission layer, a gas impermeable cover layer overlying the absorbent layer and comprising a first orifice, wherein the cover layer is moisture vapor permeable.

Claims

1. A wound treatment apparatus comprising:

a wound dressing comprising;

a transmission layer comprising a 3D knitted or fabric material;

an absorbent layer for absorbing wound exudate;

a cover layer overlying the absorbent layer and comprising an orifice;

a baffle element; and

a suction port for applying negative pressure to the wound dressing for the application of topical negative pressure at a wound site, the suction port comprising;

a connector portion configured to connect the suction port to a pump; and

a liquid impermeable gas permeable filter element arranged to prevent substantially all liquid from entering the connector portion.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a wound contact layer underlying the transmission layer.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the transmission layer comprises a 3D polyester fabric layer.

4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the 3D polyester fabric layer comprises a top textured polyester layer, a bottom flat polyester layer and a third fiber layer sandwiched therebetween.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the transmission layer comprises a first fabric layer and a second fabric layer and a plurality of spacer elements extending therebetween.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the absorbent layer has an aperture configured to permit the suction port to contact the transmission layer.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the suction port further comprises spacer elements configured to prevent the suction port from contacting the transmission layer.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the suction port comprises a wound facing portion, and the absorbent layer further comprises an aperture sized to be at least as large as the diameter of the wound facing portion of the suction port.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising one additional suction port.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, further comprising a fluid communication passage joining the suction port to the one additional suction port.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the suction port is positioned over an aperture in the absorbent layer, the suction port and the aperture being positioned closer to one side of the dressing than to an opposite side of the dressing.

12. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the absorbent layer comprises a superabsorber.

13. A wound treatment apparatus comprising:

a wound dressing comprising;

a transmission layer comprising a 3D knitted or fabric material configured to remain open upon application of negative pressure to the wound dressing;

an absorbent layer for absorbing wound exudate, the absorbent layer overlying the transmission layer;

a cover layer overlying the absorbent layer and comprising an orifice, wherein the cover layer is moisture vapor permeable;

a baffle element; and

a suction port for applying negative pressure to the wound dressing, the suction port comprising;

a connector portion connected to the suction port;

a sealing surface for sealing the suction port to the cover layer of the wound dressing; and

a liquid impermeable gas permeable filter element arranged to prevent a liquid from entering the connector portion.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the baffle element has a depth greater than the depth of the transmission layer.
