1. A method of making a reinforced hollow fiber membrane comprising the steps of:
- a) providing a core, the core having a length and a circumference perpendicular to the length;
b) providing a plurality of composite yarns, wherein each of the composite yarns comprises a first part and a second part, the first part comprising one or more generally continuous filaments extending along the length of the composite yarn, the second part comprising a plurality of filaments ends or loops protruding from the first part of the composite yarn;
c) forming a reinforcing structure around the core wherein the first parts of the plurality of composite yarns are spaced around the circumference of the core and generally aligned with the length of the core, and the second parts of the plurality of composite yarns extend around a portion of the circumference of the core and intersect with one or more filaments of one or more others of the plurality of composite yarns;
d) applying a liquid membrane dope to the reinforcing structure; and
,e) treating the liquid membrane dope to form a solid membrane.

Abstract
Various methods of making a reinforced membrane, devices for making the membranes, and the resulting membranes are described. The methods typically provide a reinforcing structure that includes filaments extending around the circumference of the membrane but without the filaments being part of a braided or woven structure. Some of the reinforcing structures also include longitudinal filaments. The methods and devices can be used to make a supporting structure in line with membrane formation steps, and also allow for a reinforced membrane to be produced that has a ratio of inside-to-outside diameters of 0.5 or more.
