Abstract

Embodiments include methods, apparatus, and systems for cable monitoring. One embodiment includes a method that receives data from an optical transceiver coupled to a cable and a RFID (radio frequency identification) device mounted to the cable. The data from the optical transceiver and RFID device is used to determine an operational status of the cable.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

receiving, at a first device, optical and laser data of a first optical transceiver from the first optical transceiver which is coupled to a first end of a fiber optic cable;

receiving, at the first device, optical and laser data of a second optical transceiver from the second optical transceiver which is coupled to a second end of the fiber optic cable; and

diagnosing, at the first device, the received data from the first and second optical transceivers to determine an electrical and optical operational status of the fiber optic cable and the first and second optical transceivers.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the operational status includes at least one of normal cable condition, degraded cable condition and failed cable condition.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the optical data includes at least one of optical power information that includes at least one of optical transmit power and optical receive power.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the laser data includes laser information that includes one of laser transmit current, laser transmit optical power, and photodiode optical energy.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the data is provided over a standard protocol that includes at least one of SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) and SMI-S (Storage Management Initiative-Specification).

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising collecting at least one of a first portion of the data from the first end of the cable and a second portion of the data from the second end of the cable.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first and second optical transceiver is a small form-factor pluggable.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first optical transceiver and the second optical transceiver communicates with the first device through an I2C (Inter-Integrated Circuit) Interface.

9. A computer system, comprising:

a memory to store processor executable instructions; and

a processor to execute the instructions to;

receive optical and laser data of a first optical transceiver from the first optical transceiver which is coupled to a first end of a fiber optic cable,

receive optical and laser data of a second optical transceiver from the second optical transceiver which is coupled to a second end of the fiber optic cable, and

diagnose the received data from the first and second optical transceivers to determine an electrical and optical operational status of the fiber optic cable and the first and second optical transceivers.

10. The computer system of claim 9, wherein the operational status includes at least one of normal cable condition, degraded cable condition and failed cable condition.

11. The computer system of claim 9, wherein the optical data includes at least one of optical power information that includes at least one of optical transmit power and optical receive power.

12. The computer system of claim 9, wherein the laser data includes laser information that includes one of laser transmit current, laser transmit optical power, and photodiode optical energy.

13. The computer system of claim 9, wherein the data is provided over a standard protocol that includes at least one of SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) and SMI-S (Storage Management Initiative-Specification).

14. The computer system of claim 9, wherein at least one of the first and second optical transceiver is a small form-factor pluggable.

15. The computer system of claim 9, wherein at least one of the first optical transceiver and the second optical transceiver communicates with the computer system through an I2C (Inter-Integrated Circuit) Interface.

16. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having computer executable instructions stored thereon, the instructions are executable by a processor to:

receive, at a first device, optical and laser data of a first optical transceiver from the first optical transceiver which is coupled to a first end of a fiber optic cable;

receive, at the first device, optical and laser data of a second optical transceiver from the second optical transceiver which is coupled to a second end of the fiber optic cable; and

diagnose, at the first device, the received data from the first and second optical transceivers to determine an electrical and optical operational status of the fiber optic cable and the first and second optical transceivers.

17. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16, wherein the operational status includes at least one of normal cable condition, degraded cable condition and failed cable condition.

18. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16, wherein the optical data includes at least one of optical power information that includes at least one of optical transmit power and optical receive power.

19. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16, wherein the laser data includes laser information that includes one of laser transmit current, laser transmit optical power, and photodiode optical energy.

20. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16, wherein the data is provided over a standard protocol that includes at least one of SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) and SMI-S (Storage Management Initiative-Specification).
