1. A lithium-ion battery having a wound electrode configuration comprising:

  • a wound cell element comprising a positive electrode and a negative electrode, the positive electrode comprising a current collector and a first active material and the negative electrode comprising a current collector and a second active material, wherein the current collectors of the positive and negative electrodes each include a leading edge, a trailing edge, and two lateral edges;

    wherein the second active material is a lithium titanate material;

    wherein the first active material is configured to be doped and undoped with lithium cations during cycling of the battery;

    wherein the current collector of the negative electrode comprises aluminum; and

    wherein the wound cell element comprises a region where a first lateral edge of the positive electrode is provided proximate a first lateral edge of the negative electrode and the first active material near the first lateral edge of the positive electrode extends beyond the second active material near the first lateral edge of the negative electrode in an axial direction relative to the wound cell element.
