1. A handheld medical device comprising:

  • an electrically powered device including a medical examination instrument;

    one or more energy storage cells configured to store energy and electrically coupled to the electrically powered device to supply energy to the electrically powered device;

    output interface circuitry electrically connected to the energy storage cells and to the electrically powered device to deliver energy from the energy storage cells to the electrically powered device and to power the electrically powered device from the energy storage cells;

    a capacitive storage device configured to receive and store energy from an external power source;

    boost circuitry configured to boost a voltage from the capacitive storage device;

    a charging circuit configured to receive energy having a boosted voltage and to recharge the storage cells using the energy having the boosted voltage; and

    charging interface circuitry electrically coupled to the capacitive storage device to receive energy from an external power source and to deliver the received energy to the capacitive storage device.
