Abstract

An airbag or inflatable cushion assembly can include an inflatable cushion and a throat liner. The throat liner can be coupled to an interior surface of the inflatable cushion at one or more coupling sites. The one or more coupling sites can include one or more panels that can be coupled to at least a portion of both of the inflatable cushion and the throat liner. The one or more panels can be configured to control or inhibit egress of an inflation gas at the one or more coupling sites.

Claims

1. An airbag assembly, comprising:

an inflator configured to generate inflation gas in response to predetermined conditions;

an inflatable cushion in fluid communication with the inflator at a throat portion, wherein the inflatable cushion comprises a front face and a rear face that cooperate to define a chamber for receiving inflation gas and that meet to form an edge of the inflatable cushion;

a throat liner comprising an aperture for passage of the inflation gas into the chamber of the inflatable cushion, and a first exterior surface, wherein the throat liner is disposed within the chamber of the inflatable cushion, wherein the first exterior surface is positioned at or adjacent to the edge of the inflatable cushion, and wherein the throat liner is coupled to the inflatable cushion at one or more coupling sites, the one or more coupling sites comprising;

a first panel coupled to an exterior surface of the inflatable cushion; and

a second panel coupled to an exterior surface of the inflatable cushion, wherein stitching couples at least a portion of the first and second panels, the inflatable cushion, and the throat liner at the one or more coupling sites,

wherein the first and second panels are configured to at least partially block holes created by the stitching into the chamber to limit egress of inflation gas through the holes.

2. The airbag assembly of claim 1, wherein a space between the first panel and the front face and a space between the second panel and the rear face are configured to not receive inflation gas upon inflation of the inflatable cushion.

3. The airbag assembly of claim 1, wherein the first panel is integral with the front face of the inflatable cushion and is at least partially defined by a fold in the front face at the edge of the inflatable cushion.

4. The airbag assembly of claim 1, wherein the second panel is integral with the rear face of the inflatable cushion and at least partially defined by a fold in the rear face at the edge of the inflatable cushion.

The airbag assembly of claim 1, further comprising a layer of elastomeric material disposed between the first panel and the front face, wherein the layer at least partially obstructs the holes into the chamber formed by the stitching at the coupling sites, the layer to inhibit egress of the inflation gas through the holes at the site of the stitching.

The airbag assembly of claim 1, further comprising a layer of elastomeric material disposed between the second panel and the rear face, wherein the layer at least partially obstructs the holes into the chamber formed by the stitching at the coupling sites, the layer to inhibit egress of the inflation gas through the holes at the site of the stitching.

7. The airbag assembly of claim 1, further comprising:

a first layer of elastomeric material disposed between the first panel and the front face; and

a second layer of elastomeric material disposed between the second panel and the rear face,

wherein the first and second layers at least partially plug holes into the chamber formed by the stitching at the coupling sites to control or inhibit egress of the inflation gas through the holes at the site of the stitching.

The airbag assembly of claim 1, wherein one or both of the first panel and the second panel are coated with an elastomeric material configured to at least partially obstruct holes into the chamber formed by the stitching at a corresponding coupling site, the elastomeric material to form a seal around the stitching and at the holes to inhibit egress of the inflation gas through the holes at the site of the stitching.

The airbag assembly of claim 1, wherein a portion of one or both of the front face and the rear face, at one or more of the one or more coupling sites, is coated with an elastomeric material configured to at least partially obstruct holes into the chamber formed by the stitching, the elastomeric material to form a seal around the stitching and at the holes to inhibit egress of the inflation gas through the holes at the site of the stitching.

The airbag assembly of claim 1, wherein the first panel extends from the edge of the inflatable cushion along an exterior surface of a front face of the inflatable cushion and overlaps a boundary seam and the first exterior surface of the throat liner, and wherein the second panel extends from the edge of the inflatable cushion along an exterior surface of a rear face of the inflatable cushion and overlaps at least the boundary seam and the first exterior surface of the throat liner.

The airbag assembly of claim 10, wherein the stitching comprises a first end and a second end, the first end and the second end spaced along a longitudinal length of the inflatable cushion and positioned at or adjacent to the edge of the inflatable cushion, wherein the stitching further comprises a first portion comprising a first transition point and a second transition point, wherein the first portion is positioned on the first and second panels opposite from the edge of the inflatable cushion, and wherein the first portion stitchingly couples each of the first and second panels, the front and rear faces of the inflatable cushion, and the throat liner, wherein the first portion forms the holes into the chamber.

12. An airbag, comprising:

an inflatable cushion coupled to an inflator at a throat portion, the inflatable cushion comprising a front face and a rear face that cooperate to form a void for receiving an inflation gas and that define an edge of the inflatable cushion;

a throat liner comprising an aperture for passage of the inflation gas into the void of the inflatable cushion, and a first exterior surface, wherein the throat liner is disposed at a position within the void of the inflatable cushion with the first exterior surface adjacent to the edge, and wherein the throat liner is coupled to the inflatable cushion at one or more coupling sites adjacent to the edge of the inflatable cushion, the one or more coupling sites comprising;

a first panel coupled to an exterior surface of the front face of the inflatable cushion; and

a second panel coupled to an exterior surface of the rear face of the inflatable cushion, wherein stitching couples at least a portion of the first and second panels, the inflatable cushion, and the throat liner at the one or more coupling sites,

wherein the first and second panels overlap a boundary seam at the edge of the inflatable cushion and the first exterior surface of the throat liner,

wherein the first and second panels are configured to interfere with holes created by the stitching into the void of the inflatable cushion to at least partially block the holes and thereby limit egress of inflation gas through the holes.

13. The airbag of claim 12, wherein a space between the first panel and the front face and a space between the second panel and the rear face are configured to not receive inflation gas upon inflation of the inflatable cushion.

14. The airbag of claim 12, wherein at least one of the first panel and the second panel comprise a first layer of elastomeric material.

15. The airbag of claim 14, wherein the elastomeric material comprises silicone.

16. The airbag of claim 14, wherein the layer of elastomeric material is configured to generate a seal at holes into the chamber formed by the stitching, and wherein the seal is configured to control or inhibit egress of inflation gas through the holes.

17. The airbag of claim 14, wherein at least a portion of at least one of the front face and the rear face of the exterior surface of the inflatable cushion comprises a second layer of elastomeric material, the portion of at least one of the front face and the rear face of the exterior surface corresponding to associated first and second panels.

The airbag of claim 17, wherein at least a portion of each of the second layers of elastomeric material of the exterior surface of the inflatable cushion contacts at least a portion of the first layer of elastomeric material of the first panel or at least a portion of the first layer of elastomeric material of the second panel at the one or more coupling sites.

19. The airbag of claim 17, wherein the first and second layers of elastomeric material are configured to generate a seal at holes into the chamber formed by the stitching, and wherein the seal is configured to control or inhibit egress of the inflation gas through the holes.

20. The airbag of claim 12, wherein at least a portion of at least one of the front face and the rear face of the exterior surface of the inflatable cushion comprises a layer of elastomeric material, the portion corresponding to associated first and second panels.

21. The airbag of claim 20, wherein the elastomeric material is configured to generate a seal at holes into the chamber formed by the stitching, and wherein the seal is configured to control or inhibit egress of the inflation gas through the holes.
