A stylus component receives optical signals indicative of the indicia pattern and determines therefrom the position of the stylus relative to the substrate. Methods of disposing indicia on the substrate, and styli suitable for sensing photoluminescent indicia are also described.

a substrate with position-unique photoluminescent indicia luminescing upon exposure to radiation within a first wavelength range; a stylus comprising an optical image sensor configured to sense the photoluminescent indicia; a radiation source that provides excitation radiation that includes at least some wavelengths within the first wavelength range; and a processor configured to receive signals from the optical image sensor and provide location-specific positional signals based on the received signals, wherein the processor is configured to sense the photoluminescent indicia when the radiation source is off.
