Abstract

Interference that occurs during wireless communication may be managed by determination and application of an adaptive path loss adjustment. A method, apparatus and medium of communication determine a level of excess received interference based at least in part on out-of-cell interference (Ioc). The path loss is adjusted by an additional path loss on an uplink signal when the level of excess received interference exceeds an interference target that would cause a Rise-over-Thermal (RoT) metric to exceed stable communication.

Claims

1. A method of communication, comprising:

determining a level of excess received interference based at least in part on an out-of-cell interference (loc) level; and

adjusting path loss at a femto node by an additional path loss on an uplink signal when the level of excess received interference exceeds an interference target that would cause a Rise-over-Thermal (RoT) metric to exceed conditions for stable system operation.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising repeating the determining and the adjusting for each time slot.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the out-of-cell interference level is determined by subtracting an in-cell interference level and a thermal noise figure (No) from a total received power.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the in-cell interference level comprises a total received power from a plurality of in-cell wireless devices.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the level of excess received interference is determined at least in part from a difference of an out-of-cell interference-to-thermal noise figure (No) ratio and the interference target.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the additional path loss corresponds to the level of excess received interference when the level of excess exceeds a high threshold value.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising reducing the path loss when the level of excess received interference does not exceed the interference target.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the additional path loss increases attenuation of the uplink signal.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the additional path loss increases a noise figure used in calculating the Rise-over-Thermal (RoT) metric.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

measuring a received pilot-chip-energy-to-interference-and-noise ratio for each of a plurality of in-cell wireless devices;

computing a filtered received pilot-chip-energy-to-interference-and-noise ratio for each of the plurality of in-cell wireless devices; and

determining a maximum filtered received pilot-chip-energy-to-interference-and-noise ratio, wherein the additional path loss is based on the maximum filtered received pilot-chip- energy-to-interference-and-noise ratio.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining an out-of-cell signal-to-noise ratio based on the out-of-cell interference level and a thermal noise figure; and

computing a filtered out-of-cell signal-to-noise ratio, wherein the level of excess received interference is based on the computed filtered out-of-cell signal-to-noise ratio.

12. An apparatus for communication, comprising:

an interference controller configured to determine a level of excess received interference based at least in part on an out-of-cell interference (Ioc) level; and

a communication controller configured to adjust path loss at a femto node by an additional path loss on an uplink signal when the level of excess received interference exceeds an interference target that would cause a Rise-over-Thermal (RoT) metric to exceed conditions for stable system operation.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the interference controller is further configured to repeat determining the level of excess received interference and the communication controller is further configured to repeat adjusting path loss for each time slot.

14. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the out-of-cell interference level is determined by subtracting an in-cell interference level and a thermal noise figure (No) from a total received power.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the in-cell interference level comprises a total received power from a plurality of in-cell wireless devices.

16. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the level of excess received interference is determined at least in part from a difference of an out-of-cell interference-to-thermal noise figure (No) ratio and the interference target.

17. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the additional path loss corresponds to the level of excess received interference when the level of excess exceeds a high threshold value.

18. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the communication controller is further configured to reduce the path loss when the level of excess received interference does not exceed the interference target.

19. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the additional path loss increases attenuation of the uplink signal.

20. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the additional path loss increases a noise figure used in calculating the Rise-over-Thermal (RoT) metric.

21. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the interference controller is further configured to:

measure a received pilot-chip-energy-to-interference-and-noise ratio for each of a plurality of in-cell wireless devices;

compute a filtered received pilot-chip-energy-to-interference-and-noise ratio for each of the plurality of in-cell wireless devices; and

determine a maximum filtered received pilot-chip-energy-to-interference-and-noise ratio, wherein the additional path loss is based on the maximum filtered received pilot-chip-energy-to-interference-and-noise ratio.

22. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the interference controller is further configured to:

determining an out-of-cell signal-to-noise ratio based on the out-of-cell interference level and a thermal noise figure; and

computing a filtered out-of-cell signal-to-noise ratio, wherein the level of excess received interference is based on the computed filtered out-of-cell signal-to-noise ratio.

23. An apparatus for communication, comprising:

means for determining a level of excess received interference based at least in part on an out-of-cell interference (Ioc) level; and

means for adjusting path loss at a femto node by an additional path loss on an uplink signal when the level of excess received interference exceeds an interference target that would cause a Rise-over-Thermal (RoT) metric to exceed conditions for stable system operation.

24. The apparatus of claim 23, further comprising means for repeating the determining and the adjusting for each time slot.

25. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the out-of-cell interference level is determined by subtracting an in-cell interference level and a thermal noise figure (No) from a total received power.

26. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein the in-cell interference level comprises a total received power received from a plurality of in-cell wireless devices.

27. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the level of excess received interference is determined at least in part from a difference of an out-of-cell interference-to-thermal noise figure (No) ratio and the interference target.

28. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the additional path loss corresponds to the level of excess received interference when the level of excess exceeds a high threshold value.

29. The apparatus of claim 23, further comprising means for reducing the path loss when the level of excess received interference does not exceed the interference target.

30. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the additional path loss increases attenuation of the uplink signal.

31. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the additional path loss increases a noise figure used in calculating the Rise-over-Thermal (RoT) metric.

32. The apparatus of claim 23, further comprising:

means for measuring a received pilot-chip-energy-to-interference-and-noise ratio for each of a plurality of in-cell wireless devices;

means for computing a filtered received pilot-chip-energy-to-interference-and-noise ratio for each of the plurality of in-cell wireless devices; and

means for determining a maximum filtered received pilot-chip-energy-to-interference-and-noise ratio, wherein the additional path loss is based on the maximum filtered received pilot-chip-energy-to-interference-and-noise ratio.

33. The apparatus of claim 23, further comprising:

means for determining an out-of-cell signal-to-noise ratio based on the out-of-cell interference level and a thermal noise figure; and

means for computing a filtered out-of-cell signal-to-noise ratio, wherein the level of excess received interference is based on the computed filtered out-of-cell signal-to-noise ratio.

34. A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising codes for causing a computer to:

determine a level of excess received interference based at least in part on an out-of-cell interference (Ioc) level; and

adjust path loss at a femto node by an additional path loss on an uplink signal when the level of excess received interference exceeds an interference target that would cause a Rise-over- Thermal (RoT) metric to exceed conditions for stable system operation.

35. The computer-readable medium of claim 34, further comprising codes for causing the computer to repeat the determining and the adjusting for each time slot.

36. The computer-readable medium of claim 34, wherein the out-of-cell interference level is determined by subtracting an in-cell interference level and a thermal noise figure (No) from a total received power.

37. The computer-readable medium of claim 36, wherein the in-cell interference level comprises a total received power from a plurality of in-cell wireless devices.

38. The computer-readable medium of claim 34, wherein the level of excess received interference is determined at least in part from a difference of an out-of-cell interference-to-thermal noise figure (No) ratio and the interference target.

39. The computer-readable medium of claim 34, wherein the additional path loss corresponds to the level of excess received interference when the level of excess exceeds a high threshold value.

40. The computer-readable medium of claim 34, further comprising codes for causing the computer to reduce the path loss when the level of excess received interference does not exceed the interference target.

41. The computer-readable medium of claim 34, wherein the additional path loss increases attenuation of the uplink signal.

42. The computer-readable medium of claim 34, wherein the additional path loss increases a noise figure used in calculating the Rise-over-Thermal (RoT) metric.

43. The computer-readable medium of claim 34, wherein the computer-readable medium further comprises codes for causing the computer to:

measure a received pilot-chip-energy-to-interference-and-noise ratio for each of a plurality of in-cell wireless devices;

compute a filtered received pilot-chip-energy-to-interference-and-noise ratio for each of the plurality of in-cell wireless devices; and

determine a maximum filtered received pilot-chip-energy-to-interference-and-noise ratio, wherein the additional path loss is based on the maximum filtered received pilot-chip-energy-to-interference-and-noise ratio.

44. The computer-readable medium of claim 34, wherein the computer-readable medium further comprises codes for causing the computer to:

determine an out-of-cell signal-to-noise ratio based on the out-of-cell interference level and a thermal noise figure; and

compute a filtered out-of-cell signal-to-noise ratio, wherein the level of excess received interference is based on the computed filtered out-of-cell signal-to-noise ratio.
