Abstract

The disclosed embodiments include a method, system, and device for conducting ultrasound interrogation of a medium. The method includes transmitting a non-beamformed or beamformed ultrasound wave into the medium, receiving more than one echoed ultrasound wave from the medium, and converting the received echoed ultrasound wave into digital data. The method may further transmit the digital data. The transmission may be wireless. The system may include a main unit, a remote unit, a locator module, transducer elements, an analog-to-digital converter in communication with the transducer elements, and a transmitter in communication with the analog-to-digital converter. The main unit and the remote unit may be part of an ultrasound imaging system and the remote unit may communicate with the main unit. The locator module may communicate with the remote unit or the main unit. The locator module may identify a location of the remote unit or the main unit.

Claims

1. A system for identifying a location of a remote unit, comprising:

a main unit configured to be operated while located external to a bounded area that includes a patient, the main unit comprising a display;

a remote unit configured to communicate ultrasound data wirelessly with the main unit while operated inside the bounded area, wherein the main unit and the remote unit are part of an ultrasound imaging system configured to provide a representation of the patient from the ultrasound data on the display;

a locator module in communication with the remote unit, the locator module configured to identify a location of the remote unit relative to the main unit while the main unit and the remote are not physically connected; and

a signal module that provides a notification signal upon establishment of a location of the remote unit relative to the main unit by the locator module, the notification signal indicating that the location of the remote unit relative to the main unit has transitioned from not located to located.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the locator module is in communication with the main unit.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the locator module uses at least one of the following techniques to identify the location of the remote unit:

global positioning, triangulation, radio frequency identification, or ultrawideband communication.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the locator module identifies a location of the main unit.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the locator module is located within at least one of the following:

the remote unit, the main unit, or another unit.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the locator module detects at least one of the following emitted from the remote unit:

an electric field or a magnetic field.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the locator module is activated by at least one of the following:

a user, the remote unit, the main unit, or another unit.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the locator module is in communication with an antenna.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the locator module senses a proximity to the remote unit using at least one of the following techniques:

optical, infrared, capacitive, inductive, electrically conductive, or radio frequency.

10. The system of claim 1, further comprising a user interface in communication with the locator module, wherein the user activates the locator module by interacting with the user interface.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the user interface is a momentary switch that the user depresses continuously to activate the locator module.

12. The system of claim 1, wherein the signal module comprises an audible signal module that emits a sound when the locator module identifies the location of remote unit with respect to the main unit.

13. The system of claim 1, wherein the signal module comprises a visible signal module that provides an indication when the locator module identifies the location of the remote unit with respect to the main unit.

14. The system of claim 1, further comprising a visible signal module that provides an indication when the locator module identifies an improper remote unit and prevents a user from selecting the improper remote unit.

15. The system of claim 1, wherein the locator module identifies a location of the remote unit when the remote unit is within 10 meters.

16. The system of claim 1, wherein the locator module attempts to identify the location of the remote unit intermittently.

17. The system of claim 1, wherein the locator module provides an indication of a direction and distance to locate at least one of the following:

the remote unit, the main unit, or another unit.

18. The system of claim 1, wherein the locator module passively produces a locator signal when placed into at least one of the following:

an electrical field or a magnetic field.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein the magnetic field operates with a relatively low frequency to permit the magnetic field to travel through obstructions to the locator module.

20. The system of claim 1, wherein the remote unit and the main unit are configurable for operation in at least one of a physically connected mode or a non-physically connected mode.

21. The system of claim 20, wherein the physically connected mode includes at least one conductor providing a physical connection between the remote unit and the main unit.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein the at least one conductor is configured for detachable physical connection with at least one of the main unit or the remote unit.

23. The system of claim 1, wherein the boundary is established as a perimeter of a sterile field established around the patient.

24. A system for identifying a location of a remote unit, comprising:

a main unit;

a remote unit configured to receive ultrasound waves, convert the ultrasound waves to ultrasound data, and communicate the ultrasound data wirelessly with the main unit, wherein the main unit and the remote unit are part of an ultrasound imaging system;

a locator module in communication with the remote unit, the locator module configured to communicate a wireless signal with the remote unit; and

a notification module that provides a notification when a strength of the signal between the locator module and the remote unit falls below a predetermined level, wherein the predetermined level represents a range sufficient to facilitate the wireless communication.

25. The system of claim 24, wherein the main unit comprises the locator module, the remote unit comprises the notification module, and the notification comprises an audible sound.
