1. A method of encoding multimedia data, comprising:
- classifying content of multimedia data, wherein the content is classified based on a target quality level;
wherein the content classification at least partially depends on at least one of a level of texture of the multimedia data, a level of visually-perceived quality of the multimedia data, and a signal-to-noise ratio of the multimedia data; and
encoding the multimedia data in a first data group and in a second data group based on the content classification, wherein the first data group comprises a coefficient and the second data group comprises a first differential refinement associated with the first data group coefficient, wherein the first data group is a base layer and the second data group is an enhancement layer.

Abstract
Apparatus and methods of using content information for encoding multimedia data are described. A method of processing multimedia data includes classifying content of multimedia data, and encoding the multimedia data in a first data group and in a second data group based on the content classification. The first and second groups are associated with quality levels. A user can request a target quality level.
