1. A method for positioning an instrument relative to an intramedullary device, comprising:
- placing the intramedullary device in a bone;
sliding an instrument assembly over the intramedullary device after placing the intramedullary device in the bone, the instrument assembly including an inner collet, a locking member, and a knob;
adjusting an angle of a cutting guide associated with the instrument assembly such that the cutting guide is off-axis relative to a longitudinal axis of the intramedullary device;
tightening the knob such that the locking member causes the inner collet to apply a clamping force to the intramedullary device; and
making a planar cut that is guided by a surface of the cutting guide.

Abstract
A locking instrument assembly for use in conjunction with an intramedullary device is disclosed. The locking instrument assembly includes an inner collet, an outer body, and a knob. The inner collet has a collar and a fastener member. The knob engages the fastener member to press the outer body against the collar. As the knob mates with the fastener member, the collar applies a clamping force to the intramedullary device.
