1. An electrical lead comprising:
- a cylindrical lead body including an outer surface, a proximal end, a distal end and a longitudinal axis extending therethrough;
a plurality of directional electrodes disposed toward the distal end of the outer surface of the cylindrical lead body; and
at least one anchoring prong attached to or otherwise integral with each of the plurality of directional electrodes to anchor the respective directional electrode to the cylindrical lead body;
wherein;
the plurality of directional electrodes include;
a first pair of electrodes whose longitudinal positioning along the longitudinal axis at least partially overlap each other, the first pair including a first electrode and a second electrode that is disposed about 180°
relative to the first electrode; and
a second pair of electrodes whose longitudinal positioning along the longitudinal axis at least partially overlap each other, the second pair including a third electrode and a fourth electrode that is disposed about 180°
relative to the third electrode; and
at least one of;
the first electrode is longitudinally disposed at least partially directly opposite a space between the second electrode and the fourth electrode;
the first pair of electrodes is rotated 10°
to 90°
relative to the second pair of electrodes; and
the plurality of directional electrodes further include a third pair of electrodes including a fifth electrode and a sixth electrode whose longitudinal positioning along the longitudinal axis at least partially overlap each other, the third pair being rotated 10°
to 90°
relative to the second pair of electrodes.

Abstract
Leads having directional electrodes thereon. Also provided are leads having directional electrodes as well as anchoring prongs to secure the electrodes to the leads. Also provided are leads with directional electrodes where all the electrodes have the same surface area. Methods of treating conditions and selectively stimulating regions of the brain such as the thalamus and cerebellum are also provided.
