1. A bar code reading device comprising:
- a two-dimensional image sensor array comprising;
a first subset of pixels comprising a plurality of monochrome pixels configured for use in generation of a frame of image data; and
a second subset of pixels;
wherein the first subset of pixels may be selectively addressed independently of the second subset of pixels by the device to read out the frame of image data, such that the device is configured to decode representations of a bar code captured in the frame of image data; and
wherein at least the first subset of pixels is configured to be operated in a global shutter mode, wherein all or substantially all of at least the first subset of pixels in the image sensor array are exposed in the image sensor array in response to an exposure control timing pulse.

Abstract
A portable hand held optical reader having a specially constructed two-dimensional image sensor array is operational in a bar code decoding mode and in a picture taking mode. The specially constructed image sensor array, in one embodiment, is a hybrid monochrome and color image sensor pixel array, wherein a first subset of the pixels are monochrome pixels devoid of wavelength selective color filter elements and a second subset of the pixels are color sensitive pixels including wavelength selective color filter elements.

11. An apparatus comprising:
-
an indicia decode module that is configured to receive a frame of image data captured by an image sensor array and decode representations of a decodable indicia in the frame of image data, the image sensor array further comprising; a plurality of monochrome pixels configured for use in generation of monochrome image data; and wherein the apparatus is configured to generate the frame of image data having pixel positions corresponding to at least the plurality of monochrome pixels; wherein for generation of the frame of image data having pixel positions corresponding to the plurality of monochrome pixels, the apparatus selectively addresses and exposes at least the plurality of monochrome pixels; and wherein the plurality of monochrome pixels in the image sensor array are exposed substantially simultaneously in the image sensor array in response to an exposure control timing pulse. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20)
