1. A method for monitoring service quality in a wireless network, the wireless network having at least one base station providing wireless connectivity to end user devices, the method comprising the steps of:

  • positioning at least one monitoring device in the wireless network, the monitoring device having one or more antennas for receiving signals from the at least one base station within the wireless network, wherein said at least one monitoring device is capable of initiating test signals and responding to test signals and wherein said at least one monitoring device is also a base station in the wireless network;

    dynamically switching said at least one monitoring device between a monitoring mode and a base station mode;

    actively testing service quality within the wireless network by selecting various test routes including both wireless and hardwired elements, and transmitting end-to-end test signals over said test routes, said test routes being between said at least one monitoring device and either a test server or a test end point, with said end-to-end test signals being routed through said at least one base station and the wireless network;

    receiving said end-to-end test signals; and

    determining the service quality using a) packet throughput and b) packet delay, using said end-to-end test signals.
