Abstract

A cleaning appliance of the canister type, including a separating apparatus for separating dirt from a dirt-bearing fluid flow, a support for supporting the separating apparatus on the appliance, a duct having a fluid inlet for receiving the fluid flow from a fluid outlet of the separating apparatus, and a handle connected to the duct. The duct is pivotable between a raised position in which the separating apparatus can be removed from the appliance and a lowered position in which the duct is connected to the separating apparatus. The handle may be used for moving the duct between the first and second positions and for carrying the appliance.

Claims

1. A cleaning appliance of the canister type, comprising:

a cyclonic separating apparatus for separating dirt from a dirt-bearing fluid flow, the separating apparatus comprising at least one cyclonic separating unit;

a support for supporting the separating apparatus on the appliance;

a duct having a fluid inlet for receiving the fluid flow from a fluid outlet of the separating apparatus, the duct being arranged downstream of all cyclonic separating units present in the cleaning appliance and being pivotable between a raised position in which the separating apparatus can be removed from the appliance and a lowered position in which the duct is connected to the separating apparatus; and

a handle connected to the duct for moving the duct between the first raised and second lowered positions and for carrying the appliance.

2. The cleaning appliance of claim 1, wherein, when in the lowered position, the duct is arranged to urge the separating apparatus against the support.

3. The cleaning appliance of claim 1, wherein the fluid inlet of the duct has a curved outer surface for engaging a conformingly curved surface of the fluid outlet of the separating apparatus.

4. The cleaning appliance of claim 1, wherein the fluid outlet of the separating apparatus is located in an upper surface thereof.

5. The cleaning appliance of claim 1, comprising a floor engaging rolling assembly housing a device for drawing the fluid flow through the separating apparatus, and wherein the duct is pivotably connected to the rolling assembly.

6. The cleaning appliance of claim 5, wherein the floor engaging rolling assembly is substantially spherical.

7. The cleaning appliance of claim 1, comprising a mechanism for moving the support relative to the duct.

8. The cleaning appliance of claim 7, wherein the mechanism for moving the support relative to the duct is arranged to pivot the support relative to the duct.

9. The cleaning appliance of claim 7, wherein the mechanism for moving the support relative to the duct comprises an inlet duct for conveying the fluid flow to the separating apparatus.

10. The cleaning appliance of claim 9, wherein the support is connected to the inlet duct.

11. The cleaning appliance of claim 1, wherein the support comprises a curved support surface for supporting the outer wall of the separating apparatus.

12. The cleaning appliance of claim 1, wherein the support comprises a spigot locatable within a recess located on the base of the separating apparatus.

13. A cleaning appliance of the canister type, comprising:

a cyclonic separating apparatus for separating dirt from a dirt-bearing fluid flow, the separating apparatus comprising at least one cyclonic separating unit and a removable filter;

a support for supporting the separating apparatus on the appliance;

a duct having a fluid inlet for receiving the fluid flow from a fluid outlet of the separating apparatus, the duct being arranged downstream of all cyclonic separating units present in the cleaning appliance and being pivotable between a raised position in which the separating apparatus can be removed from the appliance and a lowered position in which the duct is connected to the separating apparatus; and

a mechanism for urging together the fluid inlet of the duct and the fluid outlet of the separating apparatus;

wherein, when the duct is connected to the separating apparatus, the mechanism for urging together the fluid inlet of the duct and the fluid outlet of the separating apparatus causes the duct to engage with the filter.

14. The cleaning appliance of claim 13, wherein the mechanism for urging together the fluid inlet of the duct and the fluid outlet of the separating apparatus is arranged to urge the fluid outlet of the separating apparatus towards the fluid inlet of the duct.

15. The cleaning appliance of claim 13, wherein the mechanism for urging together the fluid inlet of the duct and the fluid outlet of the separating apparatus is arranged to urge the support towards the duct.

16. The cleaning appliance of claim 13, wherein the removable filter comprises a cross-over duct assembly, and the mechanism for urging together the fluid inlet of the duct and the fluid outlet of the separating apparatus causes the duct to engage with the cross-over duct assembly.

17. The cleaning appliance of claim 16, wherein the cross-over duct assembly provides a fluid outlet from the separating apparatus having a cup-shaped, concave outer surface.

18. The cleaning appliance of claim 17, wherein the duct comprises a fluid inlet having a convex outer surface for engaging the cup-shaped, concave outer surface of the fluid outlet of the separating apparatus.

19. A cleaning appliance of the canister type, comprising:

a cyclonic separating apparatus for separating dirt from a dirt-bearing fluid flow, the separating apparatus comprising at least one cyclonic separating unit;

a support for supporting the separating apparatus on the appliance;

a duct having a fluid inlet for receiving the fluid flow from a fluid outlet of the separating apparatus, the duct being arranged downstream of all cyclonic separating units present in the cleaning appliance and being pivotable between a raised position in which the separating apparatus can be removed from the appliance and a lowered position in which the duct is connected to the separating apparatus; and

a mechanism for urging together the fluid inlet of the duct and the fluid outlet of the separating apparatus when the duct is connected to the separating apparatus.

20. The cleaning appliance of claim 19, wherein the mechanism for urging together the fluid inlet of the duct and the fluid outlet of the separating apparatus is arranged to urge the fluid outlet of the separating apparatus towards the fluid inlet of the duct.

21. The cleaning appliance of claim 19, wherein the mechanism for urging together the fluid inlet of the duct and the fluid outlet of the separating apparatus is arranged to urge the support towards the duct.

22. The cleaning appliance of claim 19, wherein the mechanism for urging together the fluid inlet of the duct and the fluid outlet of the separating apparatus is a resilient member.
