Abstract

An occlusion device delivery system and methods are provided in which an expandable coiled implant can be delivered using the delivery system. The system can comprise a catheter having a lumen extending between distal and proximal portions. The distal portion can have proximal and distal apertures extending through a wall of the catheter. The expandable coiled implant, which can be wound about the distal portion, can have a proximal section that extends within the proximal aperture and a distal section that can extend radially within the distal aperture. Further, the system can comprise an elongate member that extends through the lumen and engages and radially restrains the at least one of the proximal and distal sections within its respective aperture while engaged with the member.

Claims

1. An occlusion device delivery system, comprising:

a catheter having a lumen extending between distal and proximal portions, the distal portion having proximal and distal apertures extending through a wall of the catheter;

an expandable coiled implant, wound about the distal portion, comprising a wire and having proximal and distal sections, the proximal section having a first segment that extends within the proximal aperture, the distal section comprising a second segment that extends within the distal aperture, the wire having a first cross-sectional profile between the first and second segments and a reduced cross-sectional profile in the first and second segments that is smaller than the first cross-sectional profile; and

an elongate member extending through the lumen and engaging and radially restraining the first segment within the proximal aperture and the second segment within the distal aperture.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the implant, when coiled about the distal portion, comprises a lumen and the proximal and distal sections bend radially inwardly from a helical path of the coiled implant to extend across the implant lumen.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the proximal and distal sections extend across the implant lumen less than a diameter of the implant lumen.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein, upon proximal withdrawal of the elongate member through the catheter lumen, the elongate member is configured to disengage and radially release the distal section from the distal aperture and the proximal section from the proximal aperture.

The system of claim 1, wherein in the proximal section, the wire comprises a first end configured to extend out of the proximal aperture while engaged with the elongate member, and in the distal section, the wire comprises a second end configured to extend out of the distal aperture while engaged with the elongate member.

The system of claim 5, wherein at the first end, the wire comprises a larger cross-sectional profile than in the first segment extending through the proximal aperture, and wherein at the second end, the wire comprises a larger cross-sectional profile than in the second segment extending through the distal aperture.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the first cross-sectional profile is substantially equivalent to the cross-sectional profiles of the wire at the first and second ends.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the first segment comprises a notch in the proximal section and the second segment comprises a notch in the distal segment.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the proximal and distal apertures comprise slots that are transverse to a longitudinal axis of the catheter lumen.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the wire comprises a cross-sectional profile having first and second dimensions, the second dimension measured substantially perpendicular relative to the first dimension and being less than the first dimension.

The system of claim 1, wherein the first segment comprises a first longitudinal length and the second segment comprises a second longitudinal length, the proximal aperture comprising a proximal aperture length extending transverse to a longitudinal axis of the catheter, the distal aperture comprising a distal aperture length extending transverse to the longitudinal axis, and wherein the first longitudinal length is substantially equal to the proximal aperture length and the second longitudinal length is substantially equal to the distal aperture length.

12. An occlusion device delivery system, comprising:

a catheter having proximal and distal sidewall apertures opening to a lumen of the catheter;

an expandable helical implant carried by the catheter, the implant comprising proximal and distal sections, the proximal section having a first notch positionable across the proximal aperture in an engaged position, the distal section comprising a second notch positionable across the distal aperture in the engaged position; and

an elongate member assembly extending through the lumen to engage the first notch at the proximal aperture and the second notch at the distal aperture to restrain the implant relative to the catheter.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the implant proximal and distal sections bends radially inwardly from a helical path of the implant to extend transversely across the implant lumen.

14. The system of claim 12, wherein the elongate member assembly comprises (i) a first elongate member that extends to the proximal aperture to engage the first notch and (ii) a second elongate member that extends to the distal aperture to engage the second notch.

15. The system of claim 12, wherein the elongate member assembly comprises a handle coupled to a single elongate member, the single elongate member extending to the proximal and distal apertures to engage with both the first and second notches of the implant.

The system of claim 12, wherein in the engaged position, the elongate member assembly is interposed between the first notch and the catheter at the proximal aperture and between the second notch and the catheter at the distal aperture, and wherein, upon proximal withdrawal of the elongate member assembly through the catheter lumen, the elongate member assembly is configured to disengage and radially release the distal section from the distal aperture and the proximal section from the proximal aperture.

The system of claim 12, wherein the proximal section comprises a first end configured to extend out of the proximal aperture while engaged with the elongate member assembly, and the distal section comprises a second end configured to extend out of the distal aperture while engaged with the elongate member assembly.

The system of claim 17, wherein the implant comprises a wire, and wherein at the first end, the wire comprises a larger cross-sectional profile than the wire in the first notch, and wherein at the second end, the wire comprises a larger cross-sectional profile than the wire in the second notch.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein between the first and second notches, the wire comprises a first cross-sectional profile, the first cross-sectional profile being substantially equivalent to the cross-sectional profiles of the wire at the first and second ends.

20. The system of claim 18, wherein between the first and second notches, a cross-sectional profile of the wire is larger than the cross-sectional profiles of the wire in the first and second notches.

21. The system of claim 12, wherein the implant comprises a wire, and wherein between the first and second notches, a cross-sectional profile of the wire is larger than the cross-sectional profiles of the wire in the first and second notches.

22. The system of claim 12, wherein the implant comprises a wire, and wherein the wire comprises a cross-sectional profile having first and second dimensions, the second dimension measured substantially perpendicular relative to the first dimension and being less than the first dimension.

23. The system of claim 22, wherein the wire comprises a substantially rectangular cross-sectional profile.

24. The system of claim 12, wherein the implant comprises a wire, wherein the first notch comprises a first notch width along a longitudinal axis of the wire and the second notch comprises a second notch width along the longitudinal axis of the wire, the proximal aperture comprising a proximal aperture length extending transverse to a longitudinal axis of the catheter, the distal aperture comprising a distal aperture length extending transverse to the longitudinal axis of the catheter, and wherein the first notch width is substantially equal to the proximal aperture length and the second notch width is substantially equal to the distal aperture length.
