1. An illumination device comprising:

  • at least one solid-state light emitter;

    an electrical connector for electrically connecting the at least one solid-state light emitter to a power source and having a shape substantially the same as a shape of an electrical connector for a standard incandescent or halogen bulb;

    a driving circuit in electrical communication with the electrical connector and the at least one solid-state light emitter for providing suitable current to the at least one solid-state light emitter; and

    at least partially surrounding and extending above the at least one solid-state light emitter, an optical element for directing light emitted by the at least one solid-state light emitter along an emission axis of the illumination device, substantially all of the light emitted by the illumination device being emitted along the emission axis,wherein the illumination device is compact enough to fit within a standard volume envelope of an incandescent or halogen lamp.
