Abstract

A cover for a cable connector includes, in one embodiment, a unitary cover body extending along an axis. The cover defines a cavity and has a plurality of regions. The regions have different diameters for receiving a cable connector and establishing one or more seals.

Claims

1. A cover for a connector configured to connect a signal carrying cable to a shank structure that extends outwardly from a bulkhead, the connector including a first connector diameter region and a second connector diameter region, at least a portion of which is greater than the first connector diameter region, and configured to terminate to the shank structure, the cover comprising:

a unitary cover body member having a first cover end, a second cover end, an interior cover surface, and an exterior cover surface;

wherein the unitary cover body member is configured to extend along a longitudinal axis between the first cover end and the second cover end; and

wherein the interior cover surface of the unitary cover body member includes;

a first region configured to cover a portion of the signal carrying cable and to extend from the first cover end to a first shoulder, the first region having a minimum, first cross-sectional diameter and a plurality of spaced apart grooves located adjacent to the first shoulder;

a second region configured to cover at least a portion of the first connector diameter region and extend from the first shoulder to a second shoulder, the second region having a minimum, second cross-sectional diameter, at least a portion of which is greater than the minimum, first cross-sectional diameter; and

a third region configured to cover a portion of the shank structure and extend from the second shoulder to the second cover end, the third region having a minimum, third cross-sectional diameter, at least a portion of which is less than the minimum, second cross-sectional diameter.

2. The cover of claim 1, wherein the cover comprises a rubber material.

3. The cover of claim 1, wherein the plurality of spaced apart grooves are each parallel to one another.

4. The cover of claim 1, wherein the plurality of grooves are located adjacent to the first shoulder.

5. The cover of claim 1, wherein the plurality of grooves are configured to form a plurality of moisture reservoirs.

6. The cover of claim 1, wherein the first region is configured to fit the signal carrying cable.

7. The cover of claim 1, wherein the first region is configured to fit around the signal carrying cable.

8. The cover of claim 1, wherein the first region is configured to encircle the signal carrying cable.

9. The cover of claim 1, wherein the first region is configured to form a first cover seal portion, the second region is configured to form a second cover seal portion different from the first cover seal portion, and the third region is configured to form a third cover seal portion different from the first and second cover seal portions such that the cover forms a plurality of cover seal portions.

10. The cover of claim 1, wherein the third region forms a seal portion between an interior cover surface of the third region and a component of the connector.

11. The cover of claim 1, wherein the second region is configured to fit the portion of the first connector diameter region.

12. The cover of claim 1, wherein the second region is configured to fit around the portion of the first connector diameter region.

13. The cover of claim 1, wherein the second region is configured to encircle the portion of the first connector diameter region.

14. The cover of claim 1, wherein the portion of the first connector diameter region comprises an outward facing surface of the first connector diameter region.

15. The cover of claim 1, wherein the portion of the first connector diameter region comprises a circumferential surface of the first connector diameter region.

16. The cover of claim 1, wherein the portion of the first connector diameter region comprises a knurled surface of the first connector diameter region.

17. The cover of claim 1, wherein the portion of the first connector diameter region comprises a first outward facing body portion that is spaced from a second outward facing body portion.

18. The cover of claim 1, wherein the portion of the first connector diameter region comprises a first outward facing body portion that is longitudinally spaced from a second outward facing body portion of the first connector diameter region.

19. The cover of claim 1, wherein the first connector diameter region comprises a first outer portion and a second outer portion rearwardly spaced from the first outer portion, and the second region of the interior cover surface is configured to cover the first outer portion of the first connector diameter region.

20. The cover of claim 1, wherein the third region is configured to fit the shank structure.

21. The cover of claim 1, wherein the third region is configured to fit around the shank structure.

22. The cover of claim 1, wherein the third region is configured to encircle the shank structure.

23. The cover of claim 1, wherein the first shoulder includes a rearward facing shoulder surface that faces the second cover end, the first connector diameter region includes a forward facing body surface that faces the first cover end, and the rearward facing shoulder surface is configured to face the forward facing body surface when the cover is in an assembled state.

24. The cover of claim 1, wherein the first shoulder includes a rearward facing shoulder surface that faces the second cover end, the first connector diameter region includes a forward facing body surface that faces the first cover end, and the rearward facing shoulder surface is configured to fit the forward facing body surface when the cover is in an assembled state.

25. The cover of claim 1, wherein the first connector diameter region includes a forward body surface, and the first shoulder includes a body portion facing surface that is configured to face the forward body surface when the cover is in an assembled state.

26. The cover of claim 1, wherein the first connector diameter region includes a forward body surface, and the first shoulder includes a body portion facing surface that is configured to fit the forward body surface when the cover is in an assembled state.

27. The cover of claim 26, wherein the forward body surface comprises a forward-most surface of the first connector diameter region.

28. The cover of claim 1, wherein the third region is configured to contact a rotatable coupler of the connector.

29. The cover of claim 1, wherein the first shoulder defines at least part of one of the grooves, and the third region comprises at least one additional groove.

30. The cover of claim 1, wherein at least part of the exterior cover surface has a gripping element configured to facilitate gripping of the cover.

31. A cover for a connector configured to connect a cable to a shank, the connector including a first connector diameter region and a second connector diameter region greater than the first connector diameter region, the cover comprising:

a unitary cover body member having a first cover end, a second cover end, and an interior cover surface;

wherein the unitary cover body member is configured to extend along a longitudinal axis; and

wherein the interior cover surface of the unitary cover body member includes;

a first cover region configured to encircle a portion of the cable and to extend from the first cover end to a first shoulder, the first cover region having a first cross-sectional diameter and a plurality of spaced apart, moisture inhibiting grooves located adjacent to the first shoulder;

a second cover region configured to encircle a portion of the first connector diameter region and extend from the first shoulder to a second shoulder, the second region having a second cross-sectional diameter that is greater than the first cross-sectional diameter; and

a third cover region configured to extend from the second shoulder to the second cover end, part of the third cover region configured to encircle a portion of the shank, the third cover region having a third cross-sectional diameter that is different from the second cross-sectional diameter.

32. The cover of claim 31, wherein the cover comprises a rubber material.

33. The cover of claim 31, wherein the plurality of spaced apart, moisture inhibiting grooves are each parallel to one another.

34. The cover of claim 31, wherein the first shoulder defines at least part of at least one of the grooves.

35. The cover of claim 31, wherein the plurality of grooves are configured to form a plurality of moisture reservoirs.

36. The cover of claim 31, wherein the cable is a signal carrying cable, and the first cover region is configured to fit the signal carrying cable.

37. The cover of claim 31, wherein the cable is a signal carrying cable, and the first cover region is configured to fit around the signal carrying cable.

38. The cover of claim 31, wherein the cable is a signal carrying cable, and the first region is configured to encircle the signal carrying cable.

39. The cover of claim 31, wherein the first cover region is configured to form a first cover seal portion, the second region is configured to form a second cover seal portion different from the first cover seal portion, and the third region is configured to form a third cover seal portion different from the second cover seal portion such that the cover forms a plurality of cover seal portions.

40. The cover of claim 31, wherein the third cover seal portion forms a seal portion between the interior cover surface and a component of the connector.

41. The cover of claim 31, wherein the second region is configured to fit the portion of the first connector diameter region.

42. The cover of claim 31, wherein the second region is configured to fit around the portion of the first connector diameter region.

43. The cover of claim 31, wherein the second region is configured to encircle the portion of the first connector diameter region.

44. The cover of claim 31, wherein the portion of the first connector diameter region comprises an outward facing surface of the first connector diameter region.

45. The cover of claim 31, wherein the portion of the first connector diameter region comprises a circumferential surface of the first connector diameter region.

46. The cover of claim 31, wherein the portion of the first connector diameter region comprises a knurled surface of the first connector diameter region.

47. The cover of claim 31, wherein the portion of the first connector diameter region comprises a first outward facing body portion that is spaced from a second outward facing body portion.

48. The cover of claim 31, wherein the portion of the first connector diameter region comprises a first outward facing body portion that is longitudinally spaced from a second outward facing body portion of the first connector diameter region.

49. The cover of claim 31, wherein the first connector diameter region comprises a first outer portion and a second outer portion rearwardly spaced from the first outer portion, and the second region of the interior cover surface is configured to cover the first outer portion of the first connector diameter region.

50. The cover of claim 31, wherein the third region is configured to fit a portion of the shank.

51. The cover of claim 31, wherein the third region is configured to fit around a portion of the shank.

52. The cover of claim 31, wherein the third region is configured to encircle a portion of the shank.

53. The cover of claim 31, wherein the first shoulder includes a rearward facing shoulder surface, the first connector diameter region includes a forward facing body surface, and the rearward facing shoulder surface is configured to face the forward facing body surface when the cover is in an assembled state.

54. The cover of claim 31, wherein the first shoulder includes a rearward facing shoulder surface, the first connector diameter region includes a forward facing body surface, and the rearward facing shoulder surface is configured to fit the forward facing body surface when the cover is in an assembled state.

55. The cover of claim 31, wherein the first connector diameter region includes a forward body surface, and the first shoulder includes a body portion facing surface that is configured to face the forward body surface when the cover is in an assembled state.

56. The cover of claim 31, wherein the first connector diameter region includes a forward body surface, and the first shoulder includes a body portion facing surface that is configured to fit the forward body surface when the cover is in an assembled state.

57. The cover of claim 56, wherein the forward body surface comprises a forward-most surface of the first connector diameter region.

58. The cover of claim 31, wherein the third cover region comprises at least one additional groove.

59. The cover of claim 31, wherein the third cross-sectional diameter is less than the second cross-sectional diameter.

60. The cover of claim 31, wherein the unitary cover member has an exterior cover surface, at least part of the exterior cover surface having a gripping element configured to facilitate gripping of the cover.

61. A connector cover comprising:

a unitary cover body member having a first cover end, a second cover end, and an interior cover surface;

wherein the unitary body member is configured to extend along a longitudinal axis; and

wherein the interior cover surface of the unitary cover body member includes;

a first cover region configured to fit a portion of a cable and to extend from the first cover end to a first shoulder, the first cover region having a first cross-sectional diameter and a plurality of spaced apart grooves located adjacent to the first shoulder;

a second cover region configured to fit a first connector diameter region of a connector, and extend from the first shoulder to a second shoulder, the second region having a second cross-sectional diameter that is greater than the first cross-sectional diameter; and

a third cover region configured to fit a second connector diameter region of the connector, engage a coupler of the connector, and extend from the second shoulder to the second cover end, at least part of the third cover region having a third cross-sectional diameter that is different from the second cross-sectional diameter, and at least part of the second connector diameter region being greater than the first connector diameter region.

62. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the cover comprises a rubber material.

63. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the plurality of spaced apart grooves are each parallel to one another.

64. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the plurality of grooves are located adjacent to the first shoulder.

65. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the plurality of grooves are configured to form a plurality of moisture reservoirs.

66. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the cable is a signal carrying cable, and the first region is configured to fit the signal carrying cable.

67. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the cable is a signal carrying cable, and the first region is configured to fit around the signal carrying cable.

68. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the cable is a signal carrying cable, and the first region is configured to encircle the signal carrying cable.

69. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the first region is configured to form a first cover seal portion, the second region is configured to form a second cover seal portion different from the first cover seal portion, and the third region is configured to form a third cover seal portion different from the second cover seal portion such that the cover forms a plurality of cover seal portions.

70. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the third cover region forms a seal portion between the interior cover surface and a component of the connector.

71. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the second region is configured to fit the portion of the first connector diameter region.

72. The connector cover of claim 71, wherein the second region is configured to fit around the portion of the first connector diameter region.

73. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the second region is configured to encircle the portion of the first connector diameter region.

74. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the portion of the first connector diameter region comprises an outward facing surface of the first connector diameter region.

75. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the portion of the first connector diameter region comprises a circumferential surface of the first connector diameter region.

76. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the portion of the first connector diameter region comprises a knurled surface of the first connector diameter region.

77. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the portion of the first connector diameter region comprises a first outward facing body portion that is spaced from a second outward facing body portion.

78. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the portion of the first connector diameter region comprises a first outward facing body portion that is longitudinally spaced from a second outward facing body portion of the first connector diameter region.

79. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the first connector diameter region comprises a first outer portion and a second outer portion rearwardly spaced from the first outer portion, and the second region of the interior cover surface is configured to cover the first outer portion of the first connector diameter region.

80. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the third region is configured to fit a shank portion.

81. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the third region is configured to fit around a shank portion.

82. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the third region is configured to encircle a shank portion.

83. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the first shoulder includes a rearward facing shoulder surface, the first connector diameter region includes a forward facing body surface, and the rearward facing shoulder surface is configured to face the forward facing body surface when the cover is in an assembled state.

84. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the first shoulder includes a rearward facing shoulder surface that faces the third cover portion, the first connector diameter region includes a forward facing body surface that faces the first cover portion, and the rearward facing shoulder surface is configured to fit the forward facing body surface when the cover is in an assembled state.

85. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the first connector diameter region includes a forward body surface, and the first shoulder includes a body portion facing surface that is configured to face the forward body surface when the cover is in an assembled state.

86. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the first connector diameter region includes a forward body surface, and the first shoulder includes a body portion facing surface that is configured to fit the forward body surface when the cover is in an assembled state.

87. The connector cover of claim 86, wherein the forward body surface comprises a forward-most surface of the first connector diameter region.

88. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the first shoulder defines at least part of one of the grooves.

89. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein the unitary body member has an exterior cover surface, at least part of the exterior cover surface having a gripping element configured to facilitate gripping of the cover.

90. The connector cover of claim 61, wherein a section of the connector cover is configured to be sealingly engaged with a collar, the portion configured to be received by a space defined by the collar.
