Abstract

An apparatus is described that includes a light source, a first reflector, a lens and a second reflector. The first reflector is positioned to reflect a first portion of light from the light source, wherein the first portion of light is radiated from the light source in a central forward solid angle as defined by an outer edge of the first reflector. The lens is disposed azimuthally horizontal to the light source for accepting a second portion of light from the light source emitted in a peripheral forward solid angle. The second reflector reflects the first portion of light after reflectance from the first reflector and the second portion of light after passing through the lens in a composite beam, wherein the first reflector and the lens are configured such that the first and second portions of light behave as though they were emitted from a point source at the focus of the second reflector.

Claims

1. A lighting device comprising:

a first reflective surface that circumscribes a volume;

a second reflective surface that is disposed in the volume, that comprises a central opening, and that faces the first reflective surface;

a light emitting diode that is disposed in the volume, wherein a portion of the volume is between the light emitting diode and the first reflective surface;

a first lens disposed in the central opening and oriented to receive light from the light emitting diode; and

a second lens that is at least partially disposed in the portion of the volume and that is oriented to receive light from the light emitting diode prior to incidence upon the first reflective surface and prior to incidence upon the second reflective surface.

2. The lighting device of claim 1, wherein the second lens comprises an opening.

3. The lighting device of claim 1, wherein the light emitting diode has an axis that extends through a hole in the second lens and through the first lens.

4. The lighting device of claim 1, wherein the second lens comprises a toroidal shape.

5. The lighting device of claim 1, wherein the first reflective surface and the second reflective surface are concentric with respect to one another.

6. The lighting device of claim 1, wherein the first reflective surface, the second reflective surface, the first lens, and the second lens are substantially concentric with respect to one another.

7. The lighting device of claim 1, wherein the second reflective surface is concave.

8. A lighting system comprising:

a light emitting diode that has an axis;

a first reflective surface that extends about and faces the axis;

a second reflective surface that extends about the axis, that comprises an opening through which the axis extends, and that faces the first reflective surface;

a first lens disposed in the opening; and

a second lens comprising a region that extends about the axis and is disposed between the first reflective surface and the second reflective surface.

9. The lighting system of claim 8, wherein the second lens comprises another opening.

10. The lighting system of claim 8, wherein the axis extends through a hole in the second lens.

11. The lighting system of claim 8, wherein the second lens comprises a toroidal shape.

12. The lighting system of claim 8, wherein the first reflective surface and the second reflective surface are concentric with respect to one another.

13. The lighting system of claim 8, wherein the first reflective surface, the second reflective surface, the axis, and the light emitting diode are substantially concentric with respect to one another.

14. A lighting device comprising:

a light emitting diode that has an axis;

a first reflective surface that extends about and faces the axis;

a second reflective surface that extends about the axis, that comprises an opening, and that faces the first reflective surface;

a first lens disposed in the opening, with the axis extending through the first lens; and

a second lens comprising a region that extends about the axis and is disposed between the light emitting diode and the first reflective surface.

15. The lighting device of claim 14, wherein the second lens comprises an opening.

16. The lighting device of claim 14, wherein the axis extends through a hole in the second lens.

17. The lighting device of claim 14, wherein the second lens comprises a toroidal shape.

18. The lighting device of claim 14, wherein the first reflective surface and the second reflective surface are concentric with respect to one another.

19. The lighting device of claim 14, wherein the first reflective surface, the second reflective surface, and the second lens are substantially concentric with respect to the axis.

20. The lighting device of claim 14, wherein the second reflective surface is concave.
