Abstract

A mobile terminal including a wireless communication unit configured to perform wireless communication; a touch screen display unit configured to switch between an inactivated state in which illumination is not applied to the display unit and an activated state in which illumination is applied to the display unit; and a controller configured to: sense a plurality of touch inputs on the display unit when the display unit is in the deactivated state and no illumination is applied to the display unit, and release a locked state of the mobile terminal and switch the display unit to the activated state in which illumination is applied to the display unit, when the plurality of touch inputs match a predetermined pattern.

Claims

1. A mobile terminal, comprising:

a wireless communication unit configured to perform wireless communication;

a touch screen configured to switch between an inactivated state in which illumination is not applied to the touch screen and an activated state in which illumination is applied to the touch screen; and

a controller configured to;

release a locked state of the mobile terminal and switch the touch screen to the activated state, when a plurality of touch inputs on the touch screen in the inactivated state match a predetermined pattern for releasing the locked state of the mobile terminal, wherein the plurality of touch inputs include a first touch input being on one of random positions on the touch screen in the inactivated state,

wherein in the inactivated state of the touch screen, the controller is further configured to drive the touch screen with a lower rate sensing signal for sensing the first touch input than in the activated state such that the first touch input on the touch screen is detectable in the inactivated state of the touch screen,

wherein the touch screen includes a touch sensor and a display, and is driven in the following drive states;

a drive state A in which the touch sensor is in a doze mode and the display is off,

a drive state B in which the touch sensor is in an active mode and the display is off, and

a drive state C in which the touch sensor is in the active mode and the display is on,

wherein the doze mode corresponds to the touch screen being driven with the lower rate sensing signal, and

wherein the first touch input is input in the drive state A, the second touch input is input in the drive state B, and the released locked state is in the drive state C.

2. The mobile terminal of claim 1, wherein the plurality of touch inputs include consecutive touch inputs on virtual numbered positions of the touch screen in any numbered order and shape that matches a predetermined passcode.

3. The mobile terminal of claim 2, wherein the shape of the predetermined pattern is defined by connecting points of the plurality of touch inputs.

4. The mobile terminal of claim 2, wherein the virtual numbered positions occur anywhere on the touch screen such that the predetermined pattern can be input anywhere on the touch screen in the inactivated state.

5. The mobile terminal of claim 1, wherein the plurality of touch inputs occur on a lower left hand corner or lower right hand corner of the touch screen such that the predetermined pattern can be input via a thumb of a hand holding the mobile terminal.

6. The mobile terminal of claim 1, wherein the plurality of touch inputs include consecutive touch inputs on virtual numbered equal areas of the touch screen in any numbered order and shape that matches a predetermined passcode.

7. The mobile terminal of claim 1, wherein the plurality of touch inputs include four consecutive touch inputs on virtual numbered quadrants of the touch screen in any numbered order and shape that matches a predetermined passcode.

8. The mobile terminal of claim 2, wherein the virtual numbered quadrants have varying and virtual sizes such that the virtual number quadrants occur anywhere on the touch screen and the predetermined pattern can be input anywhere on the touch screen in the inactivated state.

9. The mobile terminal of claim 1, wherein the inactivated state of the touch screen is free of any guide for inputting the predetermined pattern in order to release the locked state of the mobile terminal.

10. The mobile terminal of claim 1, wherein the controller is further configured to display a home screen or a most recently used screen when the locked state of the mobile terminal is released.

The mobile terminal of claim 1, wherein the controller is further configured to turn on a light emitting element with a first color when the plurality of touch inputs match the predetermined pattern and turn on the light emitting element with a second color when the plurality of touch inputs do not match the predetermined pattern.

12. The mobile terminal of claim 1, wherein the controller is further configured to release the locked state of the mobile terminal when the plurality of touch inputs match the predetermined pattern without displaying a passcode screen for entering a passcode for releasing the locked state.

13. The mobile terminal of claim 1, wherein the plurality of touch inputs correspond to a plurality of taps on the touch screen.

The mobile terminal of claim 1, wherein when the plurality of touch inputs have a shape with a first size that matches the predetermined pattern, the controller is further configured to display a first screen when releasing the locked state, and when the plurality of touch inputs have the shape with a second size that matches the predetermined pattern, the controller is further configured to display a second screen when releasing the locked state.

15. The mobile terminal of claim 14, wherein the second screen is a contracted first screen with a predetermined ratio, and

wherein a display position of the second screen is variable according to a region to which the plurality of touch inputs are applied.

The mobile terminal of claim 1, wherein the controller is further configured to display one or more graphic objects having different functions around a position where a last touch input among the plurality of touch inputs has been applied, when the last touch input is maintained for a predetermined time.

17. The mobile terminal of claim 16, wherein the controller is further configured to:

receive a drag input starting from the last touch input toward one of the graphic objects, and

perform a function corresponding to said one graphic object.

18. The mobile terminal of claim 1, wherein the controller is further configured to maintain the inactivated state of the touch screen and the locked state of the mobile terminal when the plurality of touch inputs do not match the predetermined pattern.

The mobile terminal of claim 18, wherein the controller is further configured to switch the inactivated state of the touch screen into the activated state and display a lock screen with a password window for releasing the locked state of the mobile terminal, if the plurality of touch inputs are input incorrectly a set number of times without matching the predetermined pattern.

20. The mobile terminal of claim 19, wherein the controller is further configured to output guidance information indicating that the plurality of touch inputs applied on the touch screen do not match the predetermined pattern.

21. The mobile terminal of claim 1, wherein the touch screen includes a sensing unit configured to sense the plurality of touch inputs.

22. The mobile terminal of claim 1, wherein a second touch input among the plurality of touch inputs includes various relative positions with respect to the first touch input in the inactivated state in which illumination is not applied to the touch screen.

23. The mobile terminal of claim 1, wherein the touch screen is driven with the lower rate sensing signal again when the second touch input is not applied within a period of time after the first touch input is applied.

The mobile terminal of claim 23, wherein the controller is further configured to switch the touch screen from the inactivated state to the activated state for outputting error information, while maintaining the locked state of the mobile terminal, when a number of times that the plurality of touch inputs does not match the predetermined pattern exceeds a predetermined number of times.

24. A method of controlling a mobile terminal, the method comprising:

switching, via a touch screen, between an inactivated state in which illumination is not applied to the touch screen and an activated state in which illumination is applied to the touch screen;

releasing, via the controller, a locked state of the mobile terminal and switching the touch screen to the activated state when a plurality of touch inputs on the touch screen in the inactivated state match a predetermined pattern for releasing the locked state of the mobile terminal, the plurality of touch inputs include a first touch input being on one of random positions on the touch screen in the inactivated state,

wherein in the inactivated state of the touch screen, the touch screen is driven with a lower rate sensing signal for sensing the first touch input than in the activated state such that the first touch input on the touch screen is detectable in the inactivated state of the touch screen,

wherein the touch screen includes a touch sensor and a display, and is driven in the following drive states;

a drive state A in which the touch sensor is in a doze mode and the display is off,

a drive state B in which the touch sensor is in an active mode and the display is off, and

a drive state C in which the touch sensor is in the active mode and the display is on,

wherein the doze mode corresponds to the touch screen being driven with the lower rate sensing signal, and

wherein the first touch input is input in the drive state A, the second touch input is input in the drive state B, and the released locked state is in the drive state C.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the plurality of touch inputs include consecutive touch inputs on virtual numbered positions of the touch screen in any numbered order and shape that matches a predetermined passcode.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the shape of the predetermined pattern is defined by connecting points of the plurality of touch inputs.

27. The method of claim 25, wherein the virtual numbered positions occur anywhere on the touch screen such that the predetermined pattern can be input anywhere on the touch screen in the inactivated state.

28. The method of claim 24, wherein the plurality of touch inputs occur on a lower left hand corner or lower right hand corner of the touch screen such that the predetermined pattern can be input via a thumb of a hand holding the mobile terminal.

29. The method of claim 24, wherein the plurality of touch inputs include consecutive touch inputs on virtual numbered equal areas of the touch screen in any numbered order and shape that matches a predetermined passcode.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein the plurality of touch inputs include four consecutive touch inputs on virtual numbered quadrants of the touch screen in any numbered order and shape that matches a predetermined passcode.

31. The method of claim 24, wherein a second touch input among the plurality of touch inputs includes various relative positions with respect to the first touch input in the inactivated state in which illumination is not applied to the touch screen.

33. The method of claim 24, further comprising:

driving the touch screen with the lower rate sensing signal again when the second touch input is not applied within a period of time after the first touch input is applied.

34. The method of claim 33, further comprising:

switching the touch screen from the inactivated state to the activated state for outputting error information, while maintaining the locked state of the mobile terminal, when a number of times that the plurality of touch inputs does not match the predetermined pattern exceeds a predetermined number of times.
